Ogden Raptors starter Brock Gilliam pitches against the Grand Junction Jackalopes on opening night Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.

The Ogden Raptors have now won five of their last six games by hitting the road and taking the team’s series opener in Colorado Springs, defeating the Rocky Mountain Vibes 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Right-hander Brock Gilliam posted another strong start for Ogden (15-10), spreading out seven hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six.

The Vibes (7-17) did hit three doubles; Gilliam pitched around one in the third inning from former Raptors outfielder Brian Dansereau, apparently traded to Rocky Mountain (daily roster transactions are typically posted to the Pioneer League’s website a day after they happen).

Former Raptor infielder Brandon Crosby drove in his team’s only run against Gilliam, doubling home Milton Smith in the fifth.

Ogden led 3-1 at that point. Juan Teixeira singled in Dakota Conners in the first, Coleton Horner scored a little-league home run in the fourth on a double and two errors, and Reese Alexiades left the yard for a solo shot in the fifth.

All that came against former Raptors pitcher Christian Day, who took the loss for the Vibes.

After Brandon McCabe threw a 1-2-3 seventh for the Raptors, RMV’s Dusty Stroup scored on a flyout and an error in the bottom of the eighth with Adam Scoggins pitching to cut Ogden’s lead to 3-2.

Ogden added insurance in the ninth, totaling four hits against Vibes reliever Rafael Kelly. Alexiades drove in Conners with a single, then scored on a Teixeira double for the 5-2 tally.

It looked for a moment like Ogden might need those runs. Dan Kubiuk pitched the ninth, walking Dansereau with two outs to bring the potential tying run to the plate in Smith, but Smith grounded out to Conners at second to end the game.

Ogden outhit Rocky Mountain 13-9, including five doubles. Five Raptors totaled two hits apiece: Alexiades, Conners, Teixeira, Cam Phelts and Sal Gozzo. Conners doubled twice.

The two teams continue the series at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
