Hess, Raptors fall out of early groove with Grand Junction in 10-5 series finale loss
Ogden heads to Great Falls on Tuesday
OGDEN — A late charge wasn’t enough for the Ogden Raptors series finale 10-5 loss to Grand Junction on Sunday afternoon at Lindquist Field. The Raptors rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, but Grand Junction’s Aydan Alger put out the fire with two decisive strikeouts.
The Jackalopes (24-41), claiming the first (13-10) and third meetings (14-5), built up a comfortable lead by the end of the seventh and held on to close the series in a draw. Right-hander Matthew Hess (2.0 IP, 2 H) kept the Raptors (29-36) steady early on in a contest that briefly mirrored Chris Macca’s strong showing in Saturday’s 3-1 victory.
Heavy hitting was Ogden’s winning theme throughout the weekend right up until it wasn’t – the Raptors couldn’t capitalize on its hits Sunday until it was too late. Five more Raptors would take the mound
Grand Junction struck first on a solo home run by Julian Boyd in the top of the third, with Ogden’s Connor Bagnieski answering right back on the other side with an RBI single knotting things up 1-1 through the third.
Both clubs traded big at-bats through the fifth: Austin Shumaker singling in two more runs for the Jackalopes at the top of the fourth and Jack Cone sending a towering solo homer over the center-field wall at the bottom of the fifth.
Ahead 3-2, Grand Junction picked up steam with a five-run seventh inning kicked off by Druw Sackett’s two-run homer with just one out on the board. A pair of base hits by Andres Rios and Jonathan Gonzales reeled in three combined runs before the side retired.
The Raptors, now trailing by six runs with two frames to go, knocked one run of its deficit during the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Nick Ultsch but needed a far larger rally to challenge Grand Junction in the ninth.
Shumaker and Jonathan Gonzales tacked on two more RBI for the Jackalopes in the ninth, bumping Grand Junction’s lead to seven runs – setting up one last stand by the Raptors.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jack Cone reached first base after being hit by a pitch and quickly found his way to third when Cole Jordan singled up the middle. An RBI single by Bagnieski brought Cone home and sent Jordan to third to make it a 10-4 deficit with one out.
Christopher Sargent delivered an RBI with his second hit of the day, bringing home Jordan to shave another run off the Jackalopes’ lead. Drew Brutcher and Raymond Gil each struck out swinging during the final two at-bats, as the Raptors’ late mojo ceased.
Ogden gets back on the road for a six-game series with the Great Falls Voyagers beginning Aug. 6 at Centene Stadium. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 7 p.m.
