Ogden Raptors give up early lead, rally falls short in loss at Glacier

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Jun 4, 2024

An early lead that seemed to have Ogden on its way to a second straight win instead ended with a rally falling short as the Raptors took a 10-9 loss Tuesday to the Glacier Range Riders in the first game of a six-game series in Kalispell, Montana.

Ogden infielder Chris Sargent doubled in two runs in the third and Nick Ultsch drove in new outfielder Kenny Oyama (who played in Boise in 2023) in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead for the visiting Raptors (2-11) through four innings.

But it all fell apart in the fifth inning when David Reckers’ solid start came undone. Reckers gave up a three-run homer to Glacier’s Mason Dinesen that tied the ballgame 5-5.

The fifth inning didn’t stop there. Mark Schommer took the mound to make his Ogden debut after the Raptors traded with Missoula (for a player to be named later) to acquire him. Schommer lasted just 1/3 of an inning, an outing that ended when he surrendered a three-run homer to Gavin Tonkel.

The eight-run inning built a 9-5 lead for first-place Glacier (10-3).

The Raptors clawed back. After a Landen Barns fielder’s choice RBI, Nick Ultsch launched a two-run home run in the eighth to cut the score to 10-9.

Another newcomer for Ogden, pitcher Ryan Steckline, used seven pitches to retire Glacier in the bottom of the eighth.

But Glacier turned to Jack Lynch to close in the ninth and he needed just 10 pitches to sit Ogden in order and secure the win.

The two teams play again at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
