Hess, Gil, Barns lead Ogden Raptors to complete 11-1 victory at Glacier
Infielders Raymond Gil and Landen Barns have not hit this season like their best times in previous Pioneer League seasons.
That changed Thursday and, behind Matthew Hess and Ogden’s best pitching of the 2024 season, the Raptors won a second consecutive game with an 11-1 victory against the Glacier Range Riders in Kalispell, Montana.
Gil hit 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Barns was 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs.
And Hess, the right-handed starter, tossed six innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits while striking out six and walking one.
Chad Castillo doubled home Christian Kirtley to put Glacier (10-5) up 1-0 after one inning. It was all Ogden (4-11) after that.
Hess keyed what became a stellar pitching night. Shane Gustafson allowed one hit, struck out two and walked zero in two relief innings before Mark Schommer pitched a quick, scoreless ninth. Raptors pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and only two walks. Hess didn’t issue a walk until the sixth inning.
Of seven total Glacier hits, Castillo’s double was one of just two with a runner on base. Ogden held the Range Riders to 2 of 15 with runners on.
The Raptors, meanwhile, batted 8 of 20 (.400) with runners on and 5 of 16 (.313) with them in scoring position.
Gil and Barns teamed up in the fourth and eighth innings to produce most of the runs.
Gil’s three-run homer in the fourth came before Barns’ two-run blast that made it 7-1. In the eighth, Gil’s RBI double preceded Barns driving in two with a single.
Chris Sargent and Pearce Howard added sacrifice flies for Ogden.
The fourth game of a six-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday.
