Ogden Raptors battle but Missoula victorious 11-5
OGDEN — When you’re a one-win team allowing 13 runs per game, any step forward feels welcome.
Still, the Ogden Raptors lost in another blowout Wednesday night against the Missoula Paddleheads, falling 11-5 at Lindquist Field.
Newly signed starter David Reckers gave Ogden (1-7) four innings; three were solid, but one was rough and that was most of the difference in game two of the six-game series.
In the first, third and fourth innings, Reckers allowed two runs on three hits, striking out three and walking two. But in the second inning, Missoula (6-2) drew three walks against the righty, who also uncorked two wild pitches. Cameron Thompson hit a solo home run and Josh Elvir a two-RBI single for a 7-1 Paddleheads lead.
Left-handed starter Dawson Day held Ogden’s bats down compared to the series opener Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking zero, earning the win over five innings.
The Raptors totaled nine hits and six were doubles. Right fielder Pearce Howard, who entered the night hitting .467, had two of those doubles, scoring twice and driving in a run. Howard, one of the main bright spots for Ogden so far, also threw out a runner trying to tag from second to third.
Howard’s first double led off the bottom of the first, and he scored on a Nick Ultsch sacrifice fly. Howard’s second double scored Jack Cone in the fifth inning.
Designated hitter Chris Sargent doubled home Howard in the eighth inning for the Raptors.
Ogden tacked on a pair of RBI singles in the ninth before Missoula closed the game.
Missoula shortstop Kamron Willman batted 3 for 5 with an RBI and four runs scored. Outfielder Adam Fogel hit 2 for 2 with a double and three runs batted in.
With pitching struggles duly noted, righty Christian Griffin and lefty Quinn Waterhouse continue to shine out of Ogden’s bullpen. Griffin threw 1 2/3 clean innings Wednesday, striking out three and allowing zero hits. Waterhouse struck out two in the ninth.
The two teams continue the series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
