Ogden Raptors split first two games with visiting Vibes; Sargent reaches RBI mark
After becoming the franchise’s single-season home run king, catcher and first baseman Chris Sargent tallied another record Wednesday as the Ogden Raptors continued their series with the visiting Rocky Mountain Vibes at Lindquist Field.
Sargent batted 2 for 4 and drove in two runs during Ogden’s 13-4 win Wednesday, giving him the Pioneer Baseball League’s single-season record for RBIs with 126.
It’s written in pencil, however, because he’ll have to hold off the field to win this season’s RBI race in order to retain the league record. Missoula’s Roberto Peña (118) and Boise’s Max Jung-Goldberg (116) are still in the chase with 16 games left.
Ogden (45-34, 19-13 second half) remains in third place in both the overall and second-half standings after splitting the first two games with the Vibes (37-42, 15-17) this week, keeping the Raptors in the playoff hunt.
The two teams continue the series through Sunday at Lindquist Field.
WED: RAPTORS 13, VIBES 4
Ogden pitchers held Rocky Mountain to two runs on six hits through eight innings, calming down after Tuesday’s performance, and the offense piled up early runs to cruise to victory in the series’ second game.
Damian Stone hit 4 for 6 and scored three runs from the leadoff spot for Ogden. He scored in the first and the Raptors led 7-1 through three innings, singling RMV pitcher Cregg Sherrer to death with seven runs on 10 hits. Sargent (twice), Kenny Oyama, Carson Tucker, Carmine Lane and Cole Jordan all recorded RBI singles early.
The Raptors dialed up the extra-basers in the fifth: Stone and True Fontenot hit RBI doubles before Connor Bagnieski swatted a two-run homer, good for a 12-1 lead.
Chase Chatman got the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits over six innings, stirking out three and walking three. Jacob Walsh struck out the side in the eighth inning.
TUES: VIBES 16, RAPTORS 12
Outfielder Sam Linscott hit 3 for 5 with a grand slam, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored as Rocky Mountain battered Ogden for 22 hits in a slugfest win to open the series. Four Ogden pitchers allowed at least three runs apiece, with Christian Griffin closing the game with a scoreless ninth.
Ogden shortstop Elliott Good homered to kick off a six-run fourth inning that put the home team ahead 9-6. But the Vibes broke out seven runs in the seventh to take control, led by Linscott’s grand slam, and the Vibes soon led 16-9 before the Raptors pushed across some runs in the ninth.
Nat Varnier got the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief for RMV, allowing three runs on five hits. Cameron Edmondson got the loss, allowing three of the seven runs in the seventh inning.
Carmine Lane hit 4 for 5 with two doubles to lead Ogden at the plate.
