Ogden Raptors outfielder Kenny Oyama strokes an RBI hit in fifth inning against the Oakland Ballers on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Raimondi Park in Oakland, Calif. For the second straight night, the Ogden Raptors held a six-run lead through two innings that led to a road win against the Oakland Ballers.
On the strength of two home runs from designated hitter Christopher Sargent, Ogden converted an early 7-1 lead into a 13-9 victory Thursday night at Raimondi Park in Oakland, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Sargent got things going with a two-run homer in the first inning. The Raptors added four runs in the second inning on three bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly, then Sargent singled home Kenny Oyama to cap the frame and create the 7-1 lead.
After a Christian Almanza homer helped Oakland (1-2) cut that margin to 7-4 in the third, Sargent came back in the top of the fourth with a solo shot. After that, Ogden plated three runs on two errors and a passed ball crossing into the fifth inning; True Fontenot’s RBI single and Damian Stone’s sacrifice fly put the Raptors ahead 13-4 through five innings.
Things got a little interesting as third-year veteran Brayden Bonner struggled on the mound again for Ogden. After allowing three earned runs while recording no outs in the ninth inning Tuesday, leading to an opening-night loss, Bonner took the ball in the sixth inning Thursday and gave up four more earned runs on five hits, including a Cam Bufford RBI double, to cut the score to 13-8.
Last year, Bonner was reliable with two wins and two saves, allowing 15 earned runs in 30 innings — making his current ERA of 63.00 and run total (seven earned runs, one inning) reach nearly half his earned runs allowed last season.
Oakland got three aboard in the ninth against Raptors pitcher Cam Edmondson, scoring one unearned run on an Edmondson error for the final tally before Edmondson ended matters by striking out Tremayne Cobb Jr. and Lou Helmig in succession.
The two teams play again at 7:35 p.m. MDT Friday. Video streams of Pioneer League games are available on Flo Baseball for a subscription. Oakland’s radio call goes out online at 860amtheanswer.com/listenlive.
