OGDEN — Don Flint of Roy didn’t know he’d be part of a goofy, fun branding moment that’s most commonly seen in minor league and independent baseball when he took his 11-year-old daughter Rylee to her first Ogden Raptors baseball game Saturday.
But the two were quick to join the small rush of fans swarming the pop-up merchandise line at Lindquist Field after the team announced that night, and every Saturday this season, the Raptors will take the field as the Utah Fry Sauce.
The pair came out with two new hats — a navy blue cap with a red bill and each bearing the new logo; it’s an anthropomorphic, sneering, cleats-wearing fry sauce bottle holding a french-fry baseball bat on his shoulder.
“It’s a little bit funny and also a bit, like, cheesy and adorable,” Rylee Flint said. “I’m really happy I convinced my dad to get (a hat).”
The debut unveiled the new logo, jerseys and even a mascot that the Raptors will use every Saturday home game this season, and maybe beyond, as the Utah Fry Sauce. The backs of the jerseys say “Get Saucy” across the top — a catchphrase Raptors players shouted several times to each other in the dugout during the first inning — and each player’s number is fashioned out of fries.
One sleeve of the otherwise navy uniform top is red for ketchup, the other sleeve is white for mayonnaise, and players wore pinkish-salmon socks, the color that results when the two are mixed to make the Beehive State’s signature condiment.
The new mascot is Saucequatch, also known as Saucy, and is simply a come-to-life mascot version of the sauce-bottle logo.
In addition to clothes for sale, the Raptors now sell bottles of Utah Fry Sauce. LaMont Hansen of Brigham City got through the merchandise line with a cap, replica uniform top and one bottle of the sauce.
Hansen said he grew up going to ballgames with his dad and, in a 37-year career at Nucor Steel, he’d missed many nights of baseball. So now retired, he’s a season ticket holder and brings his grandkids as often as he can.
“It’s a great outing,” Hansen said. “Some of my best memories were going out to the ballpark on summer evenings. So I love to come down here (to Ogden).
“It’s just awesome,” he said about the Fry Sauce identity. “That’s what Utah’s all about; it’s fry sauce, baseball, cool jerseys … so it kind of takes everything in.”
Team president Dave Baggott introduced the Utah Fry Sauce in a prerecorded video played on Lindquist Field’s new, large videoboard before first pitch. He spoke about the appeal of bringing the entire state together through a sports identity and that fry sauce as a condiment is about as unifying as it gets.
Ogden players secretly wore the new uniform tops underneath pullovers and had red Raptors hats on during warmups, then ditched the pullovers to reveal the new jerseys and passed around new ballcaps before taking the field.
Baggott said he’s in talks with grocery chains to see if bottles of Utah Fry Sauce can go on shelves in area stores. But for now, the sauce is available at the ballpark along with hats and more.
On the field Saturday, Giuseppe Ferraro-Nahr hit a two-run double in the first inning to get the Fry Sauce up 2-0 early. But soon, the Missoula Paddleheads were putting up crooked numbers and claimed an 11-6 victory. That handed the Raptors/Fry Sauce their fourth straight defeat, dropping Ogden to a 3-8 record this season.
