Utah Men’s State Am golf: Bunn, Liechty lead Northern squad into match play

Playoff, Round of 64 tees off Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in Midway

BYU signees Parker Bunn and David Liechty led the Northern Utah pack on Tuesday through the final round of stroke play at the 128th Utah Men’s State Amateur at Soldier Hollow in Midway.

Utah signee Ben Wilson (10-under) led the field.

With the cut at 3-over, the top 64 individuals advance to match play on Wednesday. But, seven players are tied for the final three spots, forcing a stroke play playoff Wednesday morning, according to a Utah Golf Association source.

Bunn (6-under), penciling five birdies and a single bogey in the second round, finished the afternoon tied for fourth with Kenny Palmer, Jesús Castaneda and David Timmins.

Liechty posted six birdies, but a double bogey on No. 15 ultimately tied the Layton High alum for ninth alongside Utah State’s Noah Moody and Utah’s Brandon Robison.

Ryan Liechty, an incoming senior at Layton, finished 2-under in a four-way tie for 17th place alongside Tyse Boman, Bret Parker and Oliver Gladwell. Box Elder alum Dallin Wheatley squeezed into the top 30 at 1-under in a nine-way tie for 29th place.

A 10-way tie for 52nd place featured three locals at 2-over: Layton alum Cooper Cannon, recent Roy High alum and state javelin champion Jesse Jones, and Weber State/Davis alum Rand Sargent.

Weber State alum Brendan Thomas (7-over), Utah Tech commit Jack Summerhays (7-over), Box Elder alum Jacob Marx (8-over), and Bonneville alum Dakota Buckway (10-over) missed the cut.

Tee times may be tentative, based on the morning’s playoff to determine the final three participants in the 64-player match-play bracket.
