Utah Men’s State Am golf: Liechty brothers march into Round of 32
Four Northern Utah players eyeing Round of 64 on Thursday in Midway

A handful of Northern Utahns survived the Round of 64 at the Utah Men’s State Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Soldier Hollow in Midway.
Parker Bunn, David Liechty, Ryan Liechty, and Max Landon each punched their ticket to the Round of 32, beginning Thursday at 7:30 a.m., which will be followed by the Round of 16 to decide Friday’s quarterfinal and semifinal table.
The 36-hole championship match is slated for Saturday at 8 a.m. in Midway.
Tied for fourth overall through stroke play, Bunn, securing the No. 9 seed, defeated Box Elder alum Dallin Wheatley (3 and 2) for the next round to face No. 25 Steele David. David Liechty, another BYU signee, defeated No. 56 Bode Salas (3 and 2) as the tourney’s No. 9 seed; he’ll meet No. 41 Joseph Jack on Wednesday in the Round of 32.
The younger Ryan Liechty, an incoming senior at Layton High, freed himself from a two-hole deficit through the front 9, and birdied three times on the back to defeat No. 47 Daniel Griffiths (2 and 1) as the No. 18 seed in his first-ever match play appearance.
Cole Ogden, a former Cougar and native of Syracuse, defeated No. 38 Dylan Winona (3 and 1) as the No. 27 seed. Up two holes with four to go, Ogden jumped to a three-hole victory on No. 17 en route to a Wednesday victory.
Five other locals — Wheatley, Griffiths, Cooper Cannon, Rand Sargent and Jesse Jones — lost their matches on Wednesday.
