Defending champion Bowen Mauss, now a sophomore at Arizona State, and offseason BYU signee David Liechty will shape one of four quarterfinal matchups, and subsequent semifinals, on Friday at Soldier Hollow. The 36-hole championship match is slated for 7 a.m. on Saturday.
Liechty, the No. 9 seed, rallied back down a hole through 12 to sidestep No. 25 Steele Dewald (2 and 1), a former Korn Ferry Tour member, through the final stretch of Thursday afternoon’s Round of 16 playoff. Fellow Cougar Parker Bunn fell to Dewald (3 and 2) earlier in the Round of 32.
Mauss, the No. 49 seed, is firing through three rounds of match play, including a six-hole victory over No. 48 Brock Sivulich in the Round of 32 to reach the Round of 16, where he defeated No. 32 Aidan Thain (3 and 2). Thain notably knocked off Ben Wilson, the No. 1 seed, by three holes in the opening round of match play.
Liechty and Mauss are slated for the first match of the day teeing off at 8 a.m. at Soldier Hollow per the official schedule.
A younger, Ryan Liechty, an incoming senior at Layton High and the No. 18 seed, made it two rounds of match play before falling to Box Elder alum and Providence signee Kanyon DeRyke (3 and 1) despite narrowing his deficit to two holes with two to go. It was a fortuitous State Am debut for Ryan, though, as he bested his older brother’s 2022 debut, when BYU alum Zac Jones won it all.
DeRyke, enjoying a three-hole lead through 12, defeated No. 2 Austin Shelley (2 and 1) to advance to the quarterfinals with No. 10 Noah Moody. Shelley, the younger brother of Cougars alum Tyson Shelley and soon-to-be-teammate Jackson Shelley.
Cole Ogden, the No. 27 seed and Syracuse native, also dropped from match play following a one-hole loss to No. 6 Jackson Mauss, who’s entering his sophomore year at BYU alongside Bunn, Shelley and David Liechty. Jackson carried on to defeat No. 11 Brandon Robison, and meet No. 46 Cameron Crawford on the other end of a 19-hole upset over No. 3 seed and BYU golfer Angus Klintworth of Johannesburg, South Africa
