Weber State quarterback Bronson Barron (10) prepares to take a snap during a spring camp practice Friday, April 1, 2022, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

Weber State University’s cheer program won its fifth consecutive national championship in the large co-ed division at the National Cheerleaders Association’s Cheer and Dance Championship on April 8 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

WSU also competed in the small team co-ed division for the first time in 2022 and claimed that national championship as well.

SPRING GAME SATURDAY

Weber State football concludes spring camp with its final practice, a spring game scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Stewart Stadium.

Admission is free and is the best chance for fans to get a look at Mickey Mental’s offense prior to the 2022 season. WSU is also advertising giveaways and a “yard sale” of WSU merchandise.

McEWEN TO PLAY AT PIT

Outgoing Weber State men’s basketball senior guard Koby McEwen was named to the rosters at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a prestigious multi-day event for 64 of the nation’s top college seniors that plays out in front of professional scouts April 13-16.

McEwen joins previous WSU players such as Jermaine Boyette, Davion Berry and Joel Bolomboy to have been invited to Portsmouth. Jerrick Harding likely would have competed at the event in 2020 but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This week is the PIT’s return from a two-year hiatus.

BYU’s Alex Barcello, and Utah State’s Justin Bean and Brandon Horvath, are also competing.

SOFTBALL SWEEPS AWARDS

Weber State softball swept the Big Sky’s weekly awards after defeating Southern Utah 25-0 over three games last weekend.

Mariah Ramirez is the pitcher of the week for a complete-game, one-hit shutout of SUU that included 16 strikeouts, a new WSU single-game record that also ties the Big Sky’s single-game record.

Chloe Camarero was the position player of the week after batting 5 for 7 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and drawing two walks.

TENNIS WINS RARE TITLE

Weber State women’s tennis won its first Big Sky regular-season championship in 22 years by defeating Idaho State 4-3 on Sunday, finishing 7-1 in league play.

WSU clinched at least a share with the win and is finished with the conference schedule. Northern Arizona is 6-1 and faces Portland State on Saturday.

The conference tournament takes place April 28-30 in Phoenix.
