McEwen named newcomer of year, 3 Weber State basketball players get Big Sky honors

For the second consecutive season, a Weber State men’s basketball player has been named Big Sky newcomer of the year and first-team honors.

Senior guard Koby McEwen was named to both for the 2021-22 season in which he has averaged 18.2 points per game and is seventh nationally in made free throws with 159. Isiah Brown was the newcomer of the year and first-team player last season.

McEwen joins the following individual award winners: Montana State’s Jubrile Belo (MVP and defensive player of the year), Montana State’s Danny Sprinkle (coach of the year), Montana’s Cam Parker and Montana State’s RaeQuan Battle (sixth man of the year), and Eastern Washington’s Ethan Price (freshman of the year).

McEwen joins the following on the All-Big Sky first team: Belo, Northern Colorado’s Daylen Kountz, Montana State’s Xavier Bishop and Southern Utah’s John Knight III.

Belo, Kountz and McEwen were all unanimous first-team selections, as voted by the league’s coaches.

WSU freshman forward Dillon Jones was named to the all-conference second team. Jones leads the Big Sky and is seventh nationally at 10.6 rebounds per game. Averaging 12.1 points per game, he has the ninth-most double-doubles nationally with 16. He joins EWU’s Linton Acliese and Steele Venters, Montana’s Josh Bannan, and Sacramento State’s Bryce Fowler on the second team.

WSU sophomore guard Seikou Sisoho Jawara was named to the third team after averaging 12.6 points per game and shooting 42.7% from the 3-point line. He joins SUU’s Maizen Fausett and Tevian Jones, Northern Arizona’s Jalen Cone, and Northern Colorado’s Matt Johnson II on the third team.

Portland State’s Khalid Thomas, Montana State’s Amin Adamu, Idaho’s Mikey Dixon and Montana’s Robbie Beasley III were named honorable mention.

On the women’s side, forward Daryn Hickok was the only Weber State player voted to all-conference honors, landing on the second team. Sacramento State’s Lianna Tillman was league MVP.
