Weber State football completes final fall camp scrimmage after thunderstorm pause

OGDEN — Fall scrimmages don’t usually have halftime breaks but Weber State football got a chance to practice that, too, in its final scrimmage of camp Saturday.
Both scoring plays came after a thunderstorm with nearby lightning forced players into the locker room for about 50 minutes. In the rain, Dijon Jennings connected with tight end Dahlyn Jones for a touchdown of about 30 yards up the sideline, and Creyton Cooper roped a touchdown fade from inside the 10 to Devin Ford late in the session.
Numberless safety Rishi Daniels picked off two passes, once off Dylan Gutierrez in the first half and another that capped the scrimmage, nabbing a ball thrown by Jennings.
Aside from escaping major injuries, head coach Mickey Mental most liked his team’s approach during the windy, rainy afternoon.
“They came out after the (break) and had really good focus … we handled the situation right,” Mental said. “And we got to have a wet-ball day. We haven’t had one of those yet. Hopefully it doesn’t rain in Seattle for our first game but if it does, we got to play with a wet ball today.”

Junior linebacker Alema Tupuola said he thought the team had the “right intensity.”
“I’m just excited to see us keep competing and pushing ourselves each week,” Tupuola said.
In the first half, redshirt freshman running back Major Givens ripped a run of about 30 yards and took a good chunk of the day’s carries. Many of the more spirited moments came after the lightning break, some of which included freshman running back Davion Godley putting his shoulder into some defenders after rushing through the first level.
Mental credited the offensive line for making space against the defensive line, the latter of which might be the team’s best, deepest unit.
“We do a lot of versatile stuff in the run game and ask a lot of our O-linemen, pulling and all that, and they started right from the beginning of the day,” Mental said.

The starting offensive line appears to be somewhat set, with a battle still playing out at center: Gavin Ortega at left tackle, Lavaka Taukeiaho at left guard, Cole Casto and Cornell transfer Terrance Caldwell at center, Vae Soifua at right guard and Zoom Esplin at right tackle.
“(Caldwell) brings a wealth of game experience and Cole’s been in the system for three years, so it’s a good battle and they’re both playing really well,” Mental said.
There were a few other moments that drew hollers from one sideline or the other during the scrimmage. Senior defensive end and Fresno State transfer Kemari Munier-Bailey arrived quickly and dropped Clarence Butler for a loss on a run attempt, and senior receiver Jacob Sharp made a diving catch on a deep ball from Richie Muñoz.
Freshman defensive end Jon Class crunched a running back on the play before Jennings threw a TD to Jones, and freshman linebacker Aizik Mahuka filled holes and popped ball carriers a few times late in the scrimmage.
“The defense played very well early on and I thought our backers had better fit than in previous days,” Mental said. “I thought they were downhill and doing a really good job. Good complimentary football on both sides today.”
