Weber State football names captains for 2024, sets depth chart for Week 1 at Washington

Weber State football has its captains for the 2024 football season.

Junior running back Damon Bankston, senior linebacker Garrett Beck, senior defensive tackle Steven Bryant, junior receiver Jayleen Record and junior cornerback Jalon Rock make up the captains for a young squad with just seven seniors on the roster.

The Wildcats also have their depth chart for the season opener this week at Washington.

On offense, there are little to no surprises. Junior transfer Terrance Caldwell is the starter at center.

The defense is less straightforward, with several co-starters owing to depth at defensive line and safety, and a couple names missing.

Sophomore Tre Parks-Vinson, highly regarded at cornerback since moving from receiver in 2023, is out indefinitely with a medical issue that requires treatment before any possible return to the field. Redshirt freshman Ishaan Daniels — who signed with WSU over Arizona, Air Force and Army — gets the nod in his place. Daniels recorded two pass breakups in two games last season.

Junior linebacker Jayden Ah You is also not listed on the depth chart. Ah You is returning from an injury and, said linebackers coach Matty Ah You, WSU is being deliberate with his return to full action. Sophomore Raimoana Tinirauarii has the start in Week 1.

“Most athletic guy in the room,” the coach Ah You said. “He could play any position but in space as our rover, he can use his speed, cover a guy man-to-man and take care of the field.”

On special teams, the kicking side of things is as expected: seniors Kyle Thompson and Grant Sands have place-kicking and long-snapping duties, while freshman Oscar Doyle, the latest Australian booter for WSU, is the punter and holder.

In the return game, Weber State is without one or more of Rashid Shaheed, Abraham Williams or Haze Hadley for the first time since 2016. Sophomore running back Clarence Butler and Record are listed as starting kick returners, the two Wildcats with previous KR experience.

Sophomore receiver Jaden Thrower is the lead punt returner with Record as No. 2.

Others may get reps at both returner spots — Zavien Abercrombie, Tajon Evans, Kade Moore, Trevian Tribble — to find the best guy, if needed, assistant coach Skyler Ridley said.

“He didn’t start at first and nobody knew about (Abraham Williams) until we got him back there,” Ridley said.

Both Weber State and Washington named their expected starters at quarterback with depth chart releases this week: sophomore Richie Muñoz for Weber and fifth-year senior Will Rogers at Washington. Rogers transferred from Mississippi State as the program’s all-time leader in career yards and touchdowns.

Below is a look at Weber State’s depth chart. Names listed first are starters, names separated by “OR” indicates co-starters, and names separated by a forward slash indicate starters and backups.
