One such change takes any drama out of this week’s lead-up: freshman Nate Dahle is listed as the starting quarterback, backed up by junior Cash McCollum. That matches the setup going into Game 2 at Southern Utah, but indicates fifth-year QB Devin Brown needs at least another week to get back with an injured finger on his throwing hand.

Head coach Eric Kjar said Tuesday it was too early to speak about any particular player or his injury; a few other changes are injury-specific while some are not.

Two of the four wide receiver slots shifted entering this week. Sophomore Robert Young officially moves into the starting role previously occupied by Tate Kjar as the junior works back from a high ankle sprain suffered early in Game 1. Young caught four passes for 57 yards at Southern Utah.

Young will be backed up by freshman La’akea Kalama; Kalama is listed as No. 2 for both the Young WR spot and the spot where Noah Kjar starts. Kalama has yet to catch a pass but was targeted on a deep ball last week.

Jasean Mayberry represents the other change at receiver. The freshman is now listed as the No. 1 in another WR slot, backed up by Mason York. Mayberry caught one pass for 8 yards last week.

The other change put in writing is at strong safety, where senior Tommy Romano and sophomore Jayden Mayberry are now listed as co-starters instead of 1-2.

Thought that’s all the changes put in writing, there’s a good chance linebacker and cornerback have some shuffling. Fifth-year captain Raimoana Tinirauarii is expected to be back with the linebacker corp but it seems likely that junior Da’Veon Ross is questionable.

At cornerback, fifth-year player Tajon Evans was on crutches after the SUU game, so it seems probable that fifth-year corner Pierre Hunter and others get involved on that side of the field.

All other spots are likely to stick. At kicker, David Dellenbach didn’t get any field goal attempts at SUU after going an easy 3 for 3 in Game 1. After sending two kickoffs out of bounds — to be fair, both were in an attempt to stay below the stiff Cedar City wind — Dellenbach did give way to Oliver Chan for WSU’s final two kickoffs; Dellenbach is still listed as the kickoff starter.

WSU offensive line grading well

Though an area of concern entering the season, Weber State’s offensive line has looked above average through two games.

Cam Mellor of Pro Football Network, a site centered around prospect and performance ratings, reports weekly about top players and units in college football receiving the highest position grades across the country.

As a unit, Mellor reported on social media site X that Weber State’s offensive line graded at 86.8 (out of 100) at Southern Utah, which was sixth-best nationally at the FCS level.

Individually, senior left guard Brody Cutrer graded 93.5 (out of 100), third nationally at his position, and senior center Jacob Edmonds graded at 90.4, which was seventh nationally.

WSU would no doubt like to have given up fewer than three sacks through two games, but Dahle and the OL have been mostly on the same page. The Wildcats also rushed for 5.7 yards per carry last week, which is plenty successful in terms of scoring points and contributing to wins.
