Weber State volleyball sweeps Northern Arizona to open Big Sky schedule
After a 3-8 nonconference record, Weber State women’s volleyball locked into a first-set battle Wednesday, opening Big Sky play at Northern Arizona.
Long points, a close margin and a key final stretch made it seem the Wildcats and Lumberjacks might be in for a five-set marathon. With WSU up 23-22, Rose Moore fired a kill and Saane Munyer walled a solo block for set point.
Despite the spirited first frame, it eventually became a sweep for the Wildcats (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) — the team’s ninth straight victory over NAU.
Set two took off with the trio of senior Kate Payne, sophomore Montana State transfer Stacia Barker and freshman Victoria Marthaler up front; WSU went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-4 lead with them on the front line. The Wildcats played sharply throughout and Payne served an ace on set point for a 25-16 decision.
The third set was another battle and NAU (7-5, 0-1 Big Sky) seemed on its way to extend the match, making a 16-16 knot into a 19-16 lead on what could have been a discouraging point for the Wildcats. NAU deflected a Munyer swing at the net and it pinballed off two wild, point-saving stabs before the Lumberjacks sent it over the net on a diving swing. NAU eventually won that point for the three-point lead.
But Moore tallied two kills to tie it 19-19. Down 20-19 and 21-20, the Wildcats twice set Moore and she delivered to keep it even. The last was the start of five straight WSU points, which included a Barker solo block, and Moore closed the match with a service ace.
Due to apparent technical difficulties, statistics were not available Wednesday night.
Weber State (4-8, 1-0) returns home Saturday and hosts Idaho in a 1 p.m. match.
