Lily Blum put the clamps on an upcoming golden boot award and Weber State women’s soccer finished its 1-2 punch over Big Sky contenders Sunday afternoon by defeating Northern Arizona 2-0 on a wet, muddy pitch at Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden.
Championship watch, however, had to wait for the season finale in the upcoming week. The first-place Wildcats needed Idaho State to beat Northern Colorado or play the Bears to a draw, which would have given Weber State an outright regular-season championship –but NoCo won 1-0 in Pocatello with a goal in the 55th minute.
In Ogden, Blum increased her season goal total to 12 in the fourth minute. The senior got a pass from Oakley Anderson at the penalty spot, put one touch on it and fired with her right foot to put WSU up 1-0.
NAU appeared to have an equalizer in the 60th minute but had a goal disallowed on a foul.
Less than three minutes later, Simone Packer got WSU some insurance. In the wettest part of the field (the northwest corner where there was standing water), Sayler Schlosser beat an NAU defender for a touch toward the middle, and Packer charged in for a liner into the lower-left part of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
WSU keeper Lauren Butorac made a pair of saves over the final 25 minutes while the Wildcats saw several more goal chances just miss and, when time expired on the match, jacket-clad Wildcats ran in from the sideline to dive on the wet grass.
Weber State (10-6-2) leads the Big Sky with 19 points (6-1-1) after handing Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona their first conference losses during the week.
The regular-season title now comes down to the final day on Thursday, Nov. 5. Weber State hosts Idaho State at 1 p.m. that day.
Northern Colorado is in second place with 17 points and NAU has 15; NoCo hosts NAU at the same time Thursday.
Weber State would clinch at least a share of the regular-season title with a draw against Idaho State, and win outright by defeating Idaho State, regardless of other results.
Northern Colorado must win to force WSU into a positive result; a draw or loss by NoCo would deliver Weber State the outright title regardless of WSU’s result.
