Weber State men’s basketball has taken a blow before the regular season has even begun.

Junior guard Alvin Jackson III will be out indefinitely after tearing an ACL in his knee, WSU head coach Kaleb Canales told the Standard-Examiner.

Jackson, a 6-foot-5 guard/wing, scored four points in 16 minutes in a Saturday exhibition win before tangling with a Westminster player going for a steal and leaving with an injured knee.

Resulting tests confirmed the bad news.

“Just feel terrible for Alvin,” Canales said. “But he’ll still be part of us, and we’ll rally and help him get through it.”

The full on-court implications are unknowable, but the basics are that Weber State will now play without its oldest player and the one coaches considered to be the team’s best perimeter defender.

Jackson transferred to WSU from Utah, where he did not play last season. Prior to that, Jackson served a mission and played one season at Salt Lake Community College. He’s the brother of former NBA draft pick Frank Jackson.

Several analyses from national basketball writers had Weber State as the second-youngest team in the country entering this season. Functionally, Jackson’s injury makes WSU the youngest team in Division I.

Weber State concludes its exhibition schedule at 6 p.m. Wednesday, hosting Colorado Mesa, before opening the regular season Monday, Nov. 2, at Oregon State.

FOOTBALL REMAINS RANKED

After a 38-33 loss at No. 3 Montana State dropped the Wildcats to 5-4 overall, Weber State football remains in the national rankings this week.

WSU stayed put at No. 22 in the STATS Perform Top 25 following the loss, which WSU entered as 21-plus-point underdogs but led at the end of three quarters before the Bobcats seized firm control.

Weber will play in the Big Sky Conference’s officially designated “game of the week” for the second straight time as No. 20 UC Davis visits Ogden for a 1 p.m. Halloween matinee.

BIG WEEK FOR SOCCER

Weber State women’s soccer had the previous week off. While the Wildcats rested, both Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona won two matches, vaulting each program to 14 points in the Big Sky table, ahead of WSU’s 13 points.

With three games left in the regular season, guess who’s coming to Ogden: Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona.

NoCo arrives Thursday for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Wildcat Soccer Field. NAU follows at 1 p.m. Sunday. Should Weber State be able to pick up two victories, they’d clinch the Big Sky regular-season title.

WSU’s conference slate finishes at home, hosting Idaho State on Thursday, Nov. 5.
