Weber State's Matt Herron (97) wraps up UC Davis running back Trent Tompkins (18) on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

Two teams who can’t take many more losses to a potential playoff resume meet Saturday afternoon when No. 22 Weber State (5-4, 4-2 Big Sky) hosts No. 20 UC Davis (5-3, 3-2) at Stewart Stadium for a Halloween matinee.

Another barometer game, the two teams usually play tightly contested games, 2025 aside. Weber State has not scored more than 18 points against UC Davis since 2019 and is 2-3 in the five matchups since.

Here’s more about the Big Sky Conference’s designated game of the week.

DEPTH CHART & INJURIES

Weber State’s depth chart looks the same as it did last week. But a leg tweak for Spencer Ferguson may mean he’s not able to go in this one. Quarterback Devin Brown increased his practice reps and looks set to resume his role as No. 2 QB behind Nate Dahle. Fifth-year receiver Marvin Session continues to be day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

MEET THE AGGIES

UC Davis has mostly managed to keep things up offensively after the departure of star freshman QB Caden Pinnick. The Aggies still average 30.4 points per game in Big Sky contests, bouncing back from a 38-17 loss at Southern Utah with a 33-6 romp over Northern Colorado last week.

Sophomore Treynor Cleeland (No. 5) is now the guy at QB for UC Davis, having started all eight games. He completed 76% of his passes for 266 yards last week. He averages 248 yards per game on a 60.5% completion rate, totaling 16 touchdowns and six interceptions.

All-league talent Sam Gbatu Jr. (No. 8) is still the receiver to watch. This season, he’s got five touchdowns and averages 104 receiving yards on seven-plus catches per game.

It’s a balanced attack of stars for Davis. In the run game, Jordan Fisher (No. 20) averages 106 yards per game on 6.7 yards per carry, totaling 10 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Aggies made news announcing the return of both Pleasant Grove-native Connors brothers in Porter and Rex, but Rex, the school’s all-time leading tackler, has not played in his fifth year after last season’s knee injury suffered while carrying the football against WSU.

Porter Conners (No. 39) has 59 tackles with 5.5 for loss, including 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Defensive back Braydon Rosa (No. 23) leads UCD with 62 tackles, one interception and three forced fumbles.

Place kicker Robert Meyer (No. 88) is 6 of 6 on field goals inside 33 yards but is 0 of 3 from 40-plus. Zach Jones (No. 3) averages 24.8 yards per punt return and has two return touchdowns.

TEAM VS. TEAM METRICS

Through nine games, Weber State averages 35.9 points per game (13th nationally) on 427.7 yards (20th nationally), including 6.2 yards per play. Defensively, WSU has allowed 34.6 points per game on 461 yards, including 6.0 yards per play.

The six-turnover debacle in Game 4 and general QB turnover propensity still has the Wildcats well behind in turnover margin at minus-nine, losing 21 giveaways (12 interceptions, nine fumbles) while gaining 12 (six interceptions, six fumbles).

WSU has also blocked six kicks this season (third nationally): three PATs, two field goals and one punt. WSU has scored one touchdown each on kickoff return, punt return, blocked punt and blocked field goal this season.

Weber leads the Big Sky with 19 sacks (24th nationally) on defense while allowing 16.

WSU averages 4.3 penalties per game for 41.2 yards.

In eight games, UC Davis scores 32 points per game on 442 yards, including 6.6 yards per play. Defensively, UCD has allowed 31 points per game on 442 yards, including 6.3 yards per play.

The Aggies are about even in turnover margin at minus-one. They’ve lost 11 turnovers (six interceptions, five fumbles) while gaining 10 takeaways (six interceptions, four fumbles).

UC Davis has recorded 12 sacks defensively while allowing 13.

The Aggies average 5.8 penalties per game for 52 yards.
