Free current events forum today at WSU

OGDEN -- Weber State University will host a Times and Issues Forum today.

The free event, designed to explore and discuss current events, will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Lair of the Shepherd Union Building.

Pew study: Tablet users don’t want to pay for news

NEW YORK — Although tablet owners spend more time consuming news than poking around on Facebook, they’re reluctant to pay for news content.

OHS documentary exemplifies changing news media

“The Million Dollar School,” the Standard-Examiner documentary about Ogden High School, had a “mini” debut screening this week.

Among the select few in the audience was reporter Nancy Van Valkenburg, the director of the documentary.

OGDEN -- The Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers will meet at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 2250 S. 1200 West.

Speakers will be Claire Fisher and Raymond Hobbs, who will discuss 20th -- and 21st -- century pioneers.

OGDEN -- A Last Chance Forum for Ogden mayoral candidates will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday in the Browning Room of the Hotel Ben Lomond, 2510 Washington Blvd. The next day is primary voting day.

Ceremony Saturday in amphitheater

OGDEN -- A ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ogden Amphitheater, 343 25th St., to commemorate the unveiling of a 7-foot bronze statue that will be part of the planned America's Fallen Firefighter Memorial.

Man, 81, pleads not guilty to assault

FARMINGTON -- Lionel Milo Nance, 81, pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a child.

Nance, of Syracuse, entered the not guilty pleas recently in 2nd District Court to three counts of rape of a child, first-degree felonies; one count of sodomy on a child, a first-degree felony; aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and two counts of sex abuse of a child, second-degree felonies.

Woods Cross police arrest suspect in catalytic converter thefts

WOODS CROSS -- Good detective work and a witness reporting suspicious activity may have solved a rash of catalytic converter thefts along the Wasatch Front, says Woods Cross Police Chief Greg Butler.

"It was just plain, good detective work," Butler said.

Also, a witness who spotted a man under a Toyota truck parked in the FrontRunner parking lot helped police with the investigation, Butler said.

Police arrested and booked into Davis County Jail, John Ryan Malaska, 29, of Farmington, on Wednesday.

Books donated to Hill Field Elementary in memory of a victim of 9/11

CLEARFIELD -- Who knew you could learn so much from a story about a cat named Pickles?

As part of a 9/11 grant the Utah Commission on Volunteering gave to United Way, five employees from Hill Air Force Base read books to students at Hill Field Elementary School on Thursday afternoon.

In-N-Out Burger not coming to Layton

LAYTON -- No double-doubles will be coming to town.

In-N-Out Burger has decided not to build one of the two Northern Utah locations it had been working toward since spring 2010.
