The reigning queen of cinema, Meryl Streep, is negotiating to star as American-born opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins.

The film will be based on the Broadway play ”Souvenir” according to the Daily Mail, and Streep will undoubtedly use her comedic skill to turn a truly tragic historical figure into a lovable, memorable on-screen character.

Florence Foster Jenkins had a bizarre career, a socialite who fancied herself an opera singer– and yet she couldn’t sing. She was dubbed ‘the worst singer in the world” so this will be interesting because Streep can actually sing.

Known for her lack of rhythm, pitch, tone and appalling pronunciation, Jenkins had hundreds of thousands of fans though it’s uncertain if they were flocking to see her for genuine enjoyment or for a laugh.

Jenkins rose to cult status through the 1930’s and 40’s, culminating in a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance in 1944 when over 2,000 people were turned away.

The singer often mistook audiences’ muffled laughter for cheers, and because her recordings still exist today you don’t have to be a vocal coach to understand why.

Perhaps the comic/tragic subject matter will be too much for Streep to refuse. Let’s hope because this sounds like a role she could really wrap her vocal chords around.

The film is set to be directed by Stephen Frears who directed Helen Mirren in “The Queen” and may also star Hugh Grant as the opera singer’s agent.
