OGDEN — The Trails Foundation of Northern Utah, or TFNU, announced Thursday the creation of Ogden Mountain Film Festival, set for Nov. 5 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater.

“Filmmakers of all experience levels are invited to submit short films that showcase local trails, mountain experiences, and outdoor recreation,” a news release said. “From hiking and trail running to mountain biking, skiing, climbing, fishing, and other pursuits, the festival aims to highlight the many ways people connect with the outdoors throughout Ogden.

“The Ogden Mountain Film Festival was created to share stories from the local outdoor community and inspire others to explore and care for the mountains, trails, and open spaces that make the region special. Films are encouraged to promote safe trail use, responsible recreation, and Leave No Trace principles.”

Kylie Thompson, marketing and communications coordinator with TFNU, told the Standard-Examiner the organization had hoped to get the ball rolling on a film festival last year.

“We were trying to put it together last year, but it kind of didn’t work out,” she said. “So this year we’re going to try to really push forward on the film submissions and trying to get people to submit films and participate and just share their experience and how they recreate.”

She said film submissions will be anywhere from tree minutes to 20 minutes long and that submissions are due by Oct. 9. The festival itself will be open to the public and ticketing information will be available at a later date. Filmmakers will be notified between October 12-16 if their work is selected for the festival.

Thompson said the films don’t require Hollywood-level production either.

“It can be just casual filming,” she said. “It’s open to all skill levels and all forms of recreation. We’re really trying to just make this more of a fun event that you can just capture footage of what you like doing outside.”

She said one of the main requirements is that films must focus on the Ogden area.

“We want to really have the films be in Ogden and that be like the focal point of it,” she said. “It can be like anything from hiking, biking, kayaking, rafting, running, climbing, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, horseback riding, dirt biking — it can be any form of recreation. We just really just want to see some films that are highlighting the beauty of recreation and all the unique ways.”

Thompson said that TFNU is happy to be able to finally move forward with the festival.

“We’re excited to make this festival come to life and see all the films,” she said.
