NEXT Ensemble, a local nonprofit organization, is looking to “transform the concert experience” by bringing The Inventures back on Saturday, this time to Ogden River Brewing, “to fuse Bach’s Two-Part Inventions for Keyboard with improvised Jazz.”
Dan Pack, executive director of NEXT Ensemble, says they want to “bring (composed) music to places it isn’t usually played, so it is more accessible.”
The Inventures — made up of Alex Rowe, Parker Speirs and Parker Swenson — specialize in “exploring the close relationship” between Bach’s compositions and jazz music. Pack explains that Bach’s Two-Part Inventions were always intended to have an improvised component and The Inventures have a special talent for it. While playing an outreach performance at a school, Pack says the kids asked the group if they knew how to play “Spongebob.” “They didn’t know how, but they played it on the spot, because they are that good.” The Inventures are known to put on a great performance and make it fun.
Though Bach’s Inventions were written for the keyboard, The Inventures bring a surprise element to their rendition with the choice of instruments. With Rowe on electric bass, Speirs on electric guitar and Swenson on drums, The Inventures show us what Bach’s compositions may have sounded like if electricity existed at the time they were written.
NEXT Ensemble supports local musicians and composers by putting on shows and ensuring the artists are paid for their work. They honor Ogden’s community of creatives, businesses and organizations by utilizing local resources and venues for their shows. Ogden River Brewing is equipped with “great food, great service and a beautiful view,” says Pack.
The Inventures: Bach By Popular Demand will take place in Ogden River Brewing’s patio space, with an entry fee of $10 and free for those under 18. You can purchase tickets online at www.nextensemble.org or pay at the door.
