ROY — Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon when an aircraft crashed in a Roy neighborhood less than two miles away from Ogden-Hinckley Airport.

According to a post on the Roy City Fire & Rescue Facebook page, the airplane crash — which occurred near 4500 South and 2350 West — was first reported to dispatch at approximately 3:55 p.m. The post noted that the small two-engine aircraft had two occupants, both of whom were transported to local hospitals.

It was further reported that one home in the area was damaged and no other injuries were sustained. Sgt. Josh Taylor of the Roy Police Department told the Standard-Examiner that the plane collided with a tree which, in turn, caused significant damage to that home before the aircraft crash-landed in the front yard of another house.

He added that multiple agencies responded to the call.

Paul Jojola, who lives down the street from the site of the crash and was home at the time of the accident, told the Standard-Examiner that he didn’t immediately realize what had happened.

“The house in between, they’re redoing the garage and they had a dumpster out here. … So, I heard this big boom and I thought they were getting a dumpster,” Jojola recounted.

Jojola says that he saw neighbors running to the source of the sound shortly thereafter and quickly joined them.

“I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And I thought they clipped a gas line or something,” he said. “[A neighbor] was just helping them out. … He had the girl and then the guy was coming out after. The girl had this big laceration on her chin and then the guy, his nose was busted up.”

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing website states that the aircraft “crashed under unknown circumstances” and that the two occupants received “serious” injuries. The accident is currently being investigated by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.

Per the FAA’s aircraft registry, the plane involved in the crash is a Piper PA-34-220T Seneca III manufactured in 1981. Cornerstone Aviation, or CSA — a flight school that operates out of Ogden and Salt Lake City — is listed as the owner of the aircraft.

A CSA representative could not be reached for comment.

Taylor noted that the process of removing the wreckage would begin following the initial investigation of the scene by FAA and NTSB officials. A significant portion of the destroyed aircraft was hauled away at approximately 2:20 p.m. Thursday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
