According to the press release, officers from the Ogden City Police Department were the first to the scene in the area around the 400 block of N Jefferson Avenue around 8:53 p.m. Saturday.
“While en route, officers observed heavy smoke and flames visible from several blocks away. Upon arrival, they located an active fire involving a field, a detached shed, and the south side of a nearby residence,” the release said. “Officers immediately checked the home for occupants and assisted with evacuations in the surrounding area, including notifying a neighboring assisted living facility as a precaution due to the fire’s rapid spread.
“Ogden Fire Department crews responded and were able to contain and extinguish the fire. The shed sustained significant damage, and the adjacent residence experienced exterior heat damage.”
The release noted that during the initial investigation, witnesses had seen individuals running from the area around the time the fire began.
“As the investigation progressed, additional information was obtained, and officers made contact with the juvenile and his family,” the release said. “He admitted to accidentally starting the fire while playing with a torch.
“This case remains under active investigation and will be reviewed in coordination with the fire marshal and detectives. No injuries have been reported at this time. Due to the age of those involved, no identifying information will be released.”
The release ended with praise for the Ogden City Fire Department and a request for parents to talk with their children about the dangers of playing with fire.
“The Ogden City Police Department extends its appreciation to the Ogden Fire Department and responding officers for their quick actions, coordination, and swift investigative efforts that led to the identification of those involved,” the release said. “We want to remind our community, as we move into the summer, to be cautious, as there will likely be fire hazards, as it looks to be a drier-than-normal year. Talk to your kids about the hazards of playing with fire and do your part to ensure the safety of our community.”
