According to a press release received Monday evening from Weber School District Public Information & Safety Officer Lane Findlay, the accident happened just after school let out that afternoon.

“Just before 3:00 p.m., a school bus went off the road on 4000 North at approximately 2975 West,” the release said. “The bus was transporting special education students from Fremont High School to their homes in the Farr West area. The substitute driver was attempting to turn the bus around when the bus backed off the shoulder of the road and into a ditch. Two high school students were on the bus at the time. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the students were injured.”

The release noted that the district’s transportation department arranged for the students to be picked up and taken home.

“A tow truck was called to pull the bus out of the ditch. The accident appears to have been caused by driver error,” the release said. “The district and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.”

Photos of the bus involved in Monday’s incident show it backed into the ditch with its front end hanging over the road.

Findlay told the Standard-Examiner in an email Tuesday afternoon that the bus ultimately was not damaged in the accident, that Monday had been the driver’s first day as a substitute driver and she had not previously traversed the route before the incident happened.
