Ryan Wilcox

Ryan Wilcox is a Republican candidate for the House District 7 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

The plaque above the dais on the floor of the Utah House of Representatives reads “VOX POLULI” for a reason. It is a constant reminder that the role of the House is to be the “Voice of the People,” to speak for those who cannot, and to protect their lives, liberty and property to enable their pursuit of happiness. It is a sacred responsibility to represent you and your family.

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

I do not believe that I am somehow uniquely qualified above any other person. I have had the honor of serving in this capacity since 2021, and I am known as one of the hardest-working legislators on the hill. I have significant experience bringing locally-driven solutions to Utah, and moving important legislation forward that ensures we remain both safe and free.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

I will continue to prioritize public safety, economic freedom and liberty. I have focused in particular on protecting children, attacking criminal networks, improving school safety, improving First Responder Mental Health and removing artificial regulatory barriers for small businesses. I remain committed to “leave it better than I found it.”

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

None of us, (let alone Utah’s 104 legislators) can accomplish anything alone! My personal philosophy reflects Lincoln’s “Team of Rivals” approach to his cabinet, creating the space to find mutual purpose, communicate with respect and foster real dialogue. By focusing on facts, observable data and inviting others to bring their best ideas in a safe environment, we build real buy-in. This has been reflected in long-term projects improving School Safety, First Responder Mental Health and empowering Cities, Counties and Citizens alike with the Public Safety Data Portal project, which, for the first time in Utah’s history is publishing the information we all need to make informed decisions for us all.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?

I will always listen, weigh the matter against the oath we take to protect our rights under the United States Constitution, research the varying perspectives involved, and do my best to represent the best interests of the citizens and families of our community.
