What happened to Iggy’s in Layton?
LAYTON — Signage has been taken down, the interior stripped, the parking lot is empty and the flame in the fire pit ceased to burn.
Only the outline of the name remains at the Iggy’s Sports Grill, 802 W. 1425 North in Layton, and a sign thanking customers for 15 years of patronage.
The question then is, what caused the Iggy’s location in Layton to close?
Previous chains, such as Mimi’s Cafe, announced the closure of their Layton locations months in advance.
The location had even received fair reviews on websites such as Facebook, Yelp and Urbanspoon.
However, when asked, the ownership preferred not to comment.
Iggy’s Sports Grill, 802 W. 1425 North in Layton, was one of nine locations in Utah, including one in St. George. In Northern Utah, Iggy’s has locations in Ogden and Centerville.
The Layton location is even scrubbed from the company website.
Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Public Information Officer Vickie Ashby said the Layton location closed March 1.
At that time, the owners surrendered their restaurant license, which allowed them to serve beer, wine and liquor with food, to the UDABC.
Jay Wall, who works at Ari Diamonds next door, saw the place closed one day.
“One day it was there,” Wall said, “the next day, the signs are down and everything is gone.”
Wall and his coworkers would eat their occasionally. When they went, the location was busy and they did not notice any problems.
They now wonder why it would shut down.
Kaysville resident Summer Pace worked at the Layton location back in 2009.
The former employee said the location was busy and she did not have any problems working there.
She said she didn’t know why the location closed.
It is uncertain if the owners, Layton-based HIP Enterprises, plan to move the restaurant to a new location instead.
What is certain is that the sports grill is not moving south to the ever-popular Station Park.
“Not at this point,” said David Anderson, Station Park general manager. “Not unless I am missing something.”
The Iggy’s ownership declined to comment on their future plans in Northern Utah as well.
For those looking to catch a bite and watch the game, other Iggy’s locations still exist, but for Layton residents, they may have to drive north or south to do so.
