West Haven to get new mayor, Rob Vanderwood, elsewhere incumbents win
OGDEN — Rob Vanderwood is headed to the mayor’s seat in West Haven.
According to unofficial, preliminary totals in balloting, which culminated Tuesday, he had garnered 1,673 votes to 1,147 for Sharon Bolos, the incumbent who was vying for her third term. That’s a 59.3%-40.7% split, too wide of a gap to close, most certainly, with the ballots yet to be counted.
Elsewhere around Weber County, Farr West mayoral challenger Ken Phippen, a member of the city council there, held a narrow 796-792 lead over incumbent Lee Dickemore, according to the vote totals released Tuesday night. But with such a narrow margin — updated vote totals are to be released Thursday — that race remains too close to call.
Otherwise, incumbents fared well and were on their way to new terms.
Incumbent Washington Terrace Mayor Mark Allen garnered 903 votes to 464 for challenger Brett DeGroot, a 66.1%-33.9% split.
Incumbent Harrisville Mayor Michelle Tait garnered 714 votes to 176 for challenger Larry Lilly, an 80.2%-19.8% split.
Incumbent Plain City Mayor Jon Beesley received 1,116 votes to 415 for challenger Miles Robinson, a 72.9%-27.1% split.
In Huntsville, Richard Sorensen, a member of the Huntsville Town Council, was on his way to becoming the new mayor. He garnered 148 votes to 93 for Doug Allen, the other hopeful, a 61.4%-38.6% split. Incumbent Mayor Jim Truett didn’t seek reelection.
Riverdale will be getting a new mayor, Braden Mitchell, the sole candidate for the top post. Incumbent Mayor Norm Searle didn’t seek reelection.
Several incumbents didn’t face challenges Tuesday and were on their way to new terms. Those include North Ogden Mayor Neal Berube, Roy Mayor Bob Dandoy, South Ogden Mayor Russell Porter and Uintah Mayor Gordon Cutler.
Incumbent Pleasant View Mayor Leonard Call easily beat back a write-in challenger.
Back in West Haven, the fastest growing city in Weber County, Vanderwood had also fared well against Bolos in the primary last August, garnering 1,194 votes to 892 for the incumbent. Third-place finisher Pat Young was eliminated from contention in that vote, setting the stage for the faceoff between Vanderwood and Bolos.
Vanderwood is finishing his first term on the West Haven City Council.
