OGDEN — John H. Thompson is looking to make a mark of service on Ogden.

This week, Thompson officially filed to run for the open at-large seat on the Ogden City Council.

He told the Standard-Examiner on Tuesday that he’s already had quite the life of service, and he wants to continue this with the City of Ogden

“I’m a retired Marine and I worked for the state for 15 years collecting child support,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to serve. I think my whole life has been based on service in the Marine Corps as well as the child support job. I’ve had a very good, comfortable and fortunate life. I was brought up to give back and help out people not so fortunate or that can use a helping hand. There are issues in the city that I don’t completely understand that I’d like to get to know more about, and the only way to do that, obviously, is if you’re actually one of the decision-makers.”

Thompson said, if elected, he wants to take on several initiatives for the city.

“I want to have an Ogden birthday celebration annually,” he said. “I’d like to get the old First Security clock going again. I’d like to see the flag put on top of the Municipal Building.”

He added that he’d also like to find out what the citizens of Ogden want to happen.

“If during the campaign people do contact me, ask me questions or send me an email, then I’ll see what’s on the minds of the people of Ogden,” he said. “I’m sure there are other things I’m just not currently aware of, but I think I’m a reasonable guy who can study data and make an honest and fair decision once I get the information to review, study and research.”

Thompson said that he’d also like to revisit any issues that have decisions made on them in the next six months, such as the WonderBlock project and Ogden Union Station plans.

Thompson is joined by Julez Garcia, Katie Matheson and Lara Gale in running for the at-large seat, which is being vacated by Luis Lopez.
