Monday Memories: Ogden Reds baseball
OGDEN — When mentioning baseball here in Utah usually we think of the Raptors or even the Bees, but the Reds? Not in this century.
The Ogden Reds were active here in Ogden between 1939-1955. They were an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds and were one of the original members of the Pioneer League. The Ogden Reds were the champs of the League 1940-1941.
The Reds left the Pioneer League in 1955, which was their last year of operation. The Reds never won another title after World War II, but a Reds player in 1954, Kenneth Hommel, won the league Triple Crown.
The Reds were only in operation for 16 years, minus 4 years for the war. The Ogden Reds paved the way for the Raptors, who are the current minor league team here in Ogden. The Ogden Dodgers and Ogden A’s were other minor league teams here after the Reds left.
The most famous Ogden Reds player was Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who was inducted in 1982. Robinson played for the Cincinnati Reds, the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Angels, and finished with the Cleveland Indians.
