Concrete signs of progress are ever more visible along the 16-mile West Davis Corridor highway project, which aims to cut traffic congestion by half in some areas of Davis and Weber counties.

The $750 million, four-lane road — from the Interstate 15-Legacy Highway junction to the future extension of State Route 193 in West Point — is on track to be finished and open to the public by mid-2024, Utah Department of Transportation Region One spokesperson Mitch Shaw said Thursday.

UDOT recently added a project tracker to its West Davis Corridor website, where residents can follow various aspects of the work. As of Thursday, the tracker reported that 99% of utilities have been installed and 95% of retaining walls are in. Progress is updated on drainage, earthwork, pavement, bridges and box culverts, sound walls, signage, landscaping, fences, sidewalks, driveways and other items.

“We’ve laid a lot of the final pavement, which is a sign of progress,” Shaw said, adding that about 45% of the pavement is ready. As the work progresses, there will be fewer references to the road as the West Davis corridor or highway, Shaw told the Standard-Examiner.

“It will be known as State Route 177,” he said. “That’s the most basic naming system we have with all of our roads. We’ll stick with the basic road number.”

According to the environmental study conducted before the project, households in western Davis and Weber counties are expected to increase by 65% over the next two decades.

With SR 177, total daily traffic delays on all roads in the study area — from I-15 to the Great Salt Lake and from Parrish Lane in Centerville to 3000 South in Hooper/West Haven — will be cut by 32.3% in 2040, the study found.

The distance people will drive in congestion will decrease by 31% on north-south roads and by 51.6% on east-west roads, according to the study.

Long-range plans, probably years away, envision SR 177 extending from West Haven through western Weber County and linking with I-15 near the Box Elder County line.
