OGDEN — The identity of a man who died as a result of injuries sustained in an electronic scooter crash Thursday afternoon has been released by police.

Lt. Will Farr of the Ogden City Police Department identified the deceased as 76-year-old Eddie Clouse of Ogden. An online obituary states that Clouse died at McKay-Dee Hospital on Thursday.

The fatal crash occurred at around 1:16 p.m. earlier that day, according to an OPD release, when the victim was riding his personal e-scooter near the 2200 block of Washington Boulevard.

As he moved northbound on Washington, a 33-year-old woman driving a northbound SUV “merged over” to make a right turn from Washington onto East 22nd Street, according to the release.

“The driver of the SUV failed to see the individual on the scooter and caused the male on the scooter to take evasive action which resulted in the male crashing the scooter,” the release stated.

He was later transported to the hospital with “severe head trauma.”

Farr told the Standard-Examiner on Monday that Clouse was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He added that the investigation is ongoing and offered the following public safety message:

“Please drive carefully and watch for bicyclists and/or scooters. Try to look twice before changing lanes or turning. When looking before changing lanes or turning, look with intention rather than out of habit. Give yourself enough time so you don’t have to rush to where you are going.”

Farr clarified that these tips don’t necessarily reflect factors that contributed to this specific incident, but he noted “they are just good driving practices that can help prevent incidents like this in the future.”
