Duane Kearsley

Duane Kearsley is a Republican candidate for Weber County Commission Seat A. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

County government sits right at the intersection of people’s daily lives and real community growth. The Weber County Commission makes decisions that directly impact our infrastructure, economy, public safety, and how we manage development.

It matters because local decisions should protect our way of life and our heritage while planning sensibly for the future, rather than just reacting to change.

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

Real-world operational experience and a lifetime of working in this community. As a facility manager overseeing more than 400 events a year across a 120-acre facility, I know how to manage complex budgets, coordinate moving parts, and deliver results under pressure. I’ve spent decades working, building, and coaching youth sports here. I am a practical operator and a doer, not a career politician.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

My focus is on bringing responsible business and economic opportunity to Weber County while fiercely preserving our western heritage and rural roots. We need smart growth that respects our water, our land, and our families. My background in large-scale project execution and operations means I know how to bring stakeholders together, cut through bureaucracy, and get things done efficiently and correctly.

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

Compromise isn’t about abandoning your core principles; it’s about finding practical solutions that allow a community to move forward. In managing large facilities and complex events, you deal with competing priorities, tight timelines, and differing stakeholder demands every single day. True progress comes from listening closely, finding the common ground, and executing a plan that works for everyone without sacrificing the end objective.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?

You balance it by listening first, doing the homework, and anchoring your decisions in sound principles. As commissioner, my primary duty is to the citizens of Weber County. That means looking at the hard facts–such as water realities, infrastructure limits, and long-term economic impact–rather than just reacting to the loudest voices in the room. You respect core values like fiscal responsibility and individual liberty, but you govern based on what is practically right and sustainable for our county’s future.
