There are a couple of ways that you can arrive at a conclusion. One is by the SAPD method (Scientifically Analyzed Proven Data} and another is by the SWAG method (Silly Wil A** Guess).

As I read the rhetoric put forth by the Utah Division of Air Quality concerning emissions from wood burning I am sure they are using the SWAG method. Have you ever seen any actual facts put forth?

A 5 percent contribution from wood stoves or 26 tons of pollution avoided by the ban in Salt Lake County? How do they know? What data did they analyze? Do they know how many wood burning units there were in each of the seven counties involved? Do they know what type are involved –high efficiency wood stoves, pellet stoves, conventional inserts, fireplaces etc.? How many hours a day do they burn? What type of fuel do they use? Different types and dryness of wood greatly affects emissions, not to mention coal.

Their conclusions sound like total SWAG. If they had data why not use it? To estimate that 26 tons of pollutants were avoided by the Salt Lake ban, wouldn’t you have to compare this year to a similar year [like that’s possible] with about the same number of bad air days? Then wouldn’t you adjust and compare the compliance rate this year against how many units were operating before restrictions? Where’s the SAPD?

The only reason you don’t use “facts” to support a conclusion is 1.you don’t have any, or 2.the “facts” don’t support what you are saying.

They where “surprised” by how many people showed up to the public hearings. Duh!! They have no idea how many homes actually use wood as an alternate heat source. Think about it. Has anyone out there ever been surveyed by DAQ concerning their wood stoves or furnace type and efficiency? Wouldn’t it require an extensive survey, not just SWAG to establish facts?

Now they will ask us to embrace their SWAG concerning diesel vehicles. They would get a lot more support if they provide us with some SAPD and a lot less SWAG.

Heck DAQ, we would be happy to give you a 10 percent-plus/minus margin on your SAPD. Please just quit with the SWAG. Its becoming insulting to those of us with a brain.
