NORTH OGDEN — Two people are dead and a home was torched in an incident that included an exchange of gunfire involving North Ogden police, according to press reports and a North Ogden Police Department statement.

North Ogden police responded to a report of shots fired in the 3200 block of Mountain Road in North Ogden around 7:15 p.m. Thursday evening, finding “smoke coming from a home,” the North Ogden Police Department said in a statement.

A male who had confronted the homeowners in the residence at 3233 Mountain Road fired on officers as they arrived and officers returned fire, apparently striking him, according to the statement. A female in the home was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The statement doesn’t provide more details, but Police Chief Dirk Quinney said the man who fired on officers is dead, according to KSL TV and KUTV. A second man was found inside the home dead, the two outlets said, with KUTV saying he had gunshot wounds. KUTV said the woman inside the home suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Weber County Attorney Chris Allred, helping lead the probe into the matter, preliminarily confirmed the TV accounts that two men are dead, but emphasized that the investigation into the matter continues. He described the events as “a bit of a complex story.”

Allred identified the man found dead inside the house as Scott Roberts and the woman found injured as Jodi Roberts but released few other details, such as a motive. In online Weber County property records, the Robertses are also listed as joint owners of the home via a revocable living trust. Allred didn’t identify the man killed outside the home in the exchange of gunfire with police.

The investigation “is moving along as quickly as possible,” he said. “I’m hopeful that we will have initial investigation results, bodycam, etc., available by middle of next week at the latest.”

The Weber/Morgan Homicide Task Force, led by investigators in Allred’s office, is handling the investigation.

As of Friday morning, the home at 3233 Mountain Road in an upper-scale neighborhood of North Ogden was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Several police officers and police cars were parked outside, along with the Weber-Metro Crime Scene Investigation truck.

Simultaneous to the confrontation between the man and police Thursday evening, the home was ablaze and firefighters from North View Fire District and other agencies subsequently doused it. The home appears to have suffered extensive fire damage.

The home across the street at 3246 Mountain Road was also cordoned off with yellow police tape Friday morning. Orange cones were set in front of the home’s garage door, which appeared to have as many as 12 bullet holes in it.

The City of North Ogden posted a message on Facebook on Friday offering thanks to first responders and lamenting the tragic turn of events. As the home at 3233 Mountain Road was burning Thursday night with the injured woman and dead man inside, first responders entered it, according to the message.

“Our officers responded to a very dangerous situation and professionally and efficiently secured the location and protected life and property. Our hearts go out to the families impacted by this incident. We are grateful our amazing police officers are safe and hope the community is able to come together to help those involved heal physically and emotionally from this traumatic event,” said the post.

The North Ogden Police Department referred additional queries to Allred.
