Ogden’s Snowbasin on proposed 2034 SLC Winter Olympics venues list
Curling not initially set to repeat at the Ice Sheet
Ogden is on track to host at least one set of events for the 2034 Winter Olympics should Salt Lake City officially secure the bid to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
Alpine skiing and para alpine skiing are both slated for Snowbasin Resort on the first list of proposed venues, a list the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games released Wednesday afternoon.
Alpine skiing typically includes the downhill, combined (downhill and slalom) and super-G competitions, which Snowbasin also hosted for the 2002 Olympics.
The Ice Sheet in Ogden, however, is not on the proposed list. The Ice Sheet, located on the campus of Weber State, hosting curling in 2002 but that event is slated for the Salt Palace Convention Center on the list for 2034.
Wednesday’s proposals are not final.
“Ten years is a long time, and event locations will evolve based on ownership changes, new sports, or new venue opportunities,” SLC-UT President Fraser Bullock said in a news release. “Events in the Games have also increased nearly 40% since 2002, so we will have time to evaluate the best placement.”
The International Olympic Committee named Salt Lake City its only “preferred host” for 2034 and the “election” to finalize the Games in Utah should take place in July at the Summer Games in Paris.
Opening and closing ceremonies are again proposed for Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah; the campus also would host the Olympic Village residences. The medals plaza is proposed for “Block 85,” also known as the “Park Place” parking lot across the street from the Delta Center.
Block 85 and another downtown location would host new events for snowboarding and “big air” that were not part of the 2002 Games.
Other proposed indoor venues include the Delta Center for figure skating and short track speed skating, the Olympic Oval in Kearns for long track speed skating, and the Maverik Center (West Valley City) and Peaks Ice Arena (Provo) for ice hockey.
Most of the rest of the events (skiing, snowboarding, bobsled, etc.) are proposed to return to the two ski resorts and the Olympic Park in Park City, with cross country and biathlon returning to Soldier Hollow in Midway.
