OGDEN — Shortly before halftime of Friday’s Ogden High football game, somebody shot off fireworks in Ogden somewhere between Ogden High and 12th Street.

Whoever shot the fireworks probably didn’t know it was an apt description of the Tigers’ game to that point.

At the time of the fireworks, Ogden led Carbon High 27-0 going into halftime and, when the sun was long gone from the sky, it was a 41-0 triumph for Ogden’s first win of the season.

Two weeks ago, the Tigers lost their season opener at Canyon View, 27-23, then went to Idaho last week to scrimmage three teams with a bye on the schedule. They worked on a few things, and Friday’s romp was the result.

“After that tough loss against Canyon View, it really helped us bring up our confidence. I felt more confident, first-game jitters, I felt more confident throwing the ball, our offensive line cleaned some things up and we’re just more confident,” Ogden quarterback Chino Furniss said.

Furniss, a returning starter who immediately put on a cowboy hat after the game, threw three touchdown passes with zero interceptions. Running back Chet Colvin ran for two scores, including one where he picturesquely hurdled a defender.

Ogden’s defense had a shutout for the first time since a 41-0, season-opening win over Judge Memorial in 2018, which set up the offense’s success Friday.

“I’m happy with the mindset of the kids this week,” Ogden head coach Erik Thompson said. “We talked about fate loves the fearless, we need to be more relaxed and have fun, play with joy and not worry so much about mistakes. I think we’ve been worrying so much about mistakes that they made more. We had a lot of penalties tonight, but we kept our head and made a lot of big plays.”

Carbon came into Friday’s game 2-0, having beaten Hillcrest and Grand. Much like the state of today’s animal kingdom, the Dinos were stuck in the mud and the Tigers quickly snapped up their target.

Colvin ran for a 10-yard touchdown to finish Ogden’s first drive of the game, which included a fourth-and-7 conversion.

The next drive started at Ogden’s own 7-yard line and ended with a long TD pass from Furniss to Kire Thompson to make it 14-0, then Colvin hurdled his way to a score on the next drive to make it 21-0 in the second quarter.

Furniss, Colvin and Erik Thompson specifically spotlighted the offensive line for having a good game Friday.

One of those linemen, Braxten Shobe, got in on the scoring when he plowed in for a 1-yard TD (27-0) before halftime.

“We came out and executed, it was payday, our team did great. Everybody did their jobs,” Colvin said.

About the only things that went wrong for Ogden were in the kicking game.

The snap for the fourth extra point sailed almost to midfield, and Adam Wilson hooked a field goal attempt in the second half, which was his only blemish after going 5 for 5 on PAT attempts.

Another defensive stop in the third quarter yielded another drive and another score for the Tigers, this one being a 9-yard toss from Furniss to Max Trujillo.

Furniss got his third touchdown pass of the night, a quick 8-yarder to tight end Lincoln Barnes for a 41-0 lead and a running clock. Dillon Romero picked off a pass late in the fourth quarter and gave Ogden a chance to kneel out the game.

After the game, there were more fireworks, but of the confetti kind.

Friday’s game was the last one for defensive line coach Zach Cottrell, and some of the players dumped a bucket of water on him afterward before firing off two confetti cannons at the 40-yard line and mobbing him in celebration.
