Prep wrestling: Layton boys, Bear River girls win team titles at Layton Invitational Tournament

Layton High School’s boys wrestling team won the team championship at its own Layton Invitational Tournament over the weekend, accumulating 254 points and finishing just ahead of 5A powers Payson (250.5) and Uintah (242).

The Lancers had three individual champions and one runner-up.

Bear River’s girls team won the LIT team championship with 287.5 points, ahead of region rival Mountain Crest (255), as four Bears wrestlers won individual championships.

SYRACUSE SCUFFLE TOURNAMENT

At the Syracuse Scuffle tournament at Syracuse High over the weekend, Bear River’s boys wrestling team went 7-1 in dual matches, Syracuse went 7-2, Weber went 4-5 and Northridge 1-7.

Max Miller went 6-0 in dual matches for BRHS in the 132-pound weight category, while Daxton Bingham went 7-1 at 120, Vincent Fertig went 7-1 at 165 and Kwade Kosoff went 7-1 at 190.

For Syracuse, Gavin Regis went 8-0 at 144 pounds, Mason Carlson went 7-0 (120) and Porter Carlson went 6-1 (106).

For Weber, Tanner Giatras went 8-0 wrestling at both 165 and 175 pounds, and Ian Briskey went 8-0 at 285 with seven pins.

Ethan De Leon was Northridge’s leading wrestler, going 6-3 at 126 pounds with two pins and one major decision.
