Prep basketball roundup: Sowards fills it up, scores 31 to lead Roy over Bonneville

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Elijah Sowards’ hot start to the season continued for the Roy High boys basketball team Wednesday night.

Sowards poured in 31 points on 15-of-23 shooting and added 12 rebounds to lead the Royals past Bonneville 47-34 on the road.

That gives Sowards scoring efforts of 31, 25, 25, 18 and 15 points in his first five games this season for an average of 22.8 per game. He also has rebounding efforts of 20 and 11 in his last two games.

Roy led 16-11 at halftime, then Sowards scored multiple buckets in a runaway third quarter to push the Royals’ lead to 30-15. Beau Belnap had six assists with two steals for Roy (2-3) and Jonathan Alcaraz scored six points.

Nate Burdett had 13 points for the Lakers (1-5). Ben Tesch and Derek Keith had six points each.

SYRACUSE 56, KEARNS 48

SYRACUSE — Syracuse outscored Kearns 17-4 in the third quarter to erase a two-point halftime deficit and take control for a home win.

Kaden Erickson led all scorers with 17 points for Syracuse (5-1). Carter Semrow added 13 points and Brevin Hamblin scored nine.

WOODS CROSS 74, FREMONT 53

PLAIN CITY — Woods Cross outscored Fremont 24-11 in the third quarter to break a halftime tie in a road win.

Mason Bendinger poured in 30 points for Woods Cross (6-2) to lead all scorers. Alex Brey had 15 points with three 3-pointers and Jaxon Smith totaled 14 points with four treys. The Wildcats made 10 3-pointers on the night.

Hunter Hansen led Fremont (3-4) with 22 points and two 3-pointers. Gage McFarland tallied 11 points and three treys. David Calvert added nine points.

WAKE FOREST-NC 72, BOX ELDER 68 (OT)

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Box Elder outscored Wake Forest (North Carolina) 36-31 in the second half to force overtime but was outscored 12-8 in the bonus period to conclude the first game of a three-game road trip to The Tar Heel State.

Jackson McKee led a quartet of Bees in double figures, scoring 17 points. Elijah Kersey added 16 points, Cole Mortensen 12 and Gabe Sever tallied 10 for Box Elder (2-3).

VIEWMONT 53, JUAN DIEGO 49

DRAPER — Jaxon Heusser scored 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc to lead Viewmont to a road win.

Scott Noel added 10 points and six rebounds for Viewmont (2-3). Mitch Jeppesen totaled seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

SKY VIEW 76, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 69

SMITHFIELD — Four Eagles scored in double figures as Layton Christian dropped a decision at Sky View.

Tyrese Lacey led Layton Christian (3-3) with 16 points and two 3-pointers. Otavio Armani added 15 points and two treys. Souleymane Barro tallied 14 and Timmie Olubisi scored 13 points with two 3-pointers.

FREMONT 62, CORNER CANYON 45

SANDY — Fremont led 18-7 after the first quarter in a win over Corner Canyon at the Beetdigger Classic hosted by Jordan High.

Sierra Eddie led all scorers with 24 points and three 3-pointers for Fremont (2-3). Kaidance King scored 11 points and Aly Coombs added nine.

FARMINGTON 62, TAYLORSVILLE 49

TAYLORSVILLE — Farmington led 52-30 after three quarters in a road win. Victoria Clinger led Farmington (4-2) with 15 points and three 3-pointers. Whitney Avei and Marissa Marchant scored 11 each.
