Prep basketball roundup: Tough 4th puts Bonneville over Bountiful, setting up region title game Friday

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville High boys basketball outscored Bountiful 8-1 in the fourth quarter to win a close game against the Redhawks by a final score of 49-46 on Wednesday night.

Bonneville’s win sets up a winner-take-all showdown for the Region 5 championship Friday at home against Woods Cross.

Carson Jones led Bonneville (16-4, 7-2 Region 5) with 19 points, 13 of them coming in the second half as the Lakers came back from a 29-23 halftime deficit. Bo Dixon added 13 points and Jake Williams knocked down four 3-pointers for 12 points. Bonneville shot 8 of 11 at the free-throw line while Bountiful went 2 of 7.

Trevin Ostler scored 14 points for Bountiful (6-15, 1-8) and Tavan Russell hit four 3s for 12 points.

WOODS CROSS 52, VIEWMONT 45

BOUNTIFUL — Mason Bendinger’s double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds helped Woods Cross get a crucial road win.

Bendinger shot 9 of 18 from the field and played all 32 minutes for Woods Cross (14-7, 7-2 Region 5). Jaxon Smith scored 16 points with four 3-pointers.

Scott Noel and Radek Pulsipher led Viewmont (9-13, 4-5) with 14 points each. Noel pulled in eight rebounds.

BOX ELDER 74, NORTHRIDGE 60

LAYTON — Box Elder shot 22 of 29 at the foul line to help the Bees win on the road.

Cole Mortensen led Box Elder (14-7, 6-3 Region 5) with 22 points and went 11 of 13 at the free-throw line. Matthew Low and Elijah Kersey each scored 14 points and Jackson McKee added 10. Low made three 3-pointers and shot 5 of 6 at the charity stripe.

Kade Sparrow led all scorers with 25 points for Northridge (9-13, 2-7), knocking down a game-high five 3-pointers. Sam Sivulich scored 17 points.

BEAR RIVER LEARNS OPPONENTS

Bear River High boys and girls basketball teams learned their first-round 4A playoff opponents Wednesday.

The boys team, with a record of 6-15, is the No. 12 seed and travels to face No. 5 Crimson Cliffs (St. George) at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18.

The girls team, with a 5-16 regular-season record, earned the No. 11 seed and travels to No. 6 Mountain Crest at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18.

WRESTLING

5A, 3A STATE FIRST DAY

Box Elder High boys wrestler Bridger Ricks entered the state record book in his first match of the 5A state tournament on Wednesday.

Ricks pinned Mountain View’s Mason Grow in eight seconds, tied for the third fastest pin in state history, according to the UHSAA record book.

Ricks, wrestling at 120 pounds, then won his second match and is one of seven boys wrestlers from Region 5 schools who will wrestle in Thursday’s semifinals at Utah Valley University.

Joining Ricks in the semis are Viewmont’s Spencer Lee (126 pounds), Box Elder’s Jackson Ricks (132), Woods Cross’ Colton Erickson (144), Viewmont’s Moses Espinoza-Owens (157), Viewmont’s Marcus Espinoza-Owens (165) and Woods Cross’ Cash Henderson (215)

In the 5A boys team standings, Viewmont is in fourth place with 53.5 points and Box Elder’s sixth with 45 points. Uintah leads the way at 144.5 points ahead of Payson’s 135.

At the 5A girls state tournament, Northridge High is in third place as a team with 66 points, behind Uintah (73) and Maple Mountain (81.5).

Cecibeth Santos (110), Mikalah Whitehouse (120), Hailey Holton (125), Annie Clanton (135), Riley Winters (190) and Karla Padilla Zapeda (235) will wrestle in Thursday’s semifinals for Northridge.

Bonneville’s Hadlie Hood (130) qualified for the semis for the Lakers.

In the 3A boys tournament in Richfield, Morgan High is second in the team standings with 101.5 points, behind Juab’s 140 points.

The Trojans have nine wrestlers in Thursday’s semifinals: Ryler Jorgensen (106), Drew Korth (113), Will Korth (126), Blake Woolsey (132), Rylan Crowther (144), Zak Sargent (144), Jarron Campbell (150), Rylee Creasey (215) and Cole Keele (285).

Ben Lomond’s Laurenz Davis will wrestle in the 285-pound semifinals after scoring a first-round pin and a sudden-victory win in his second-round match Wednesday.

At the combined 3A/2A/1A girls state tournament, two Ogden High wrestlers are in Thursday’s semifinals: Brighton Summers (110) and Tomi Rogers (235). Morgan’s Tenley Jones (100) will also wrestle in the semis.
