Fremont High junior sprinter Amare Harlan tied the state record in the girls 100 meter race with a time of 11.68 seconds back in March at the City-County meet at Weber High, matching Herriman sprinter Keysha Love’s 11.68 time from several years earlier.

On Saturday at the BYU Invitational, Harlan claimed the record for herself, clocking a time of 11.58 seconds to win the 6A-4A girls 100-meter race and put her name atop the state record books.

Had some gusts of wind blown perhaps 30 seconds before or after Harlan ran the 200 meter race, she would’ve had another state record.

Harlan won the 200 in a wind-aided 23.70 seconds, as trackside wind gauges picked up a helping breeze of 2.1 meters per second, just above the allowable record-keeping limit of 2.0 meters per second. The state record is 23.75 seconds, set in 2017 by Enterprise High’s Jaslyn Gardner, who’s now running for BYU’s women’s track team.

Harlan is a junior and has two more chances this season, and ostensibly her whole senior year, to improve upon her record: the Region 1 meet this week at Davis High and the state meet back on BYU’s fast track later this month.
