Wahlquist wins Weber School District’s 2023 junior high boys basketball championship

Players from the Wahlquist Junior High boys basketball team lift the Weber School District championship trophy after defeating Roy Junior on Feb. 8, 2023, at Fremont High School in Plain City.After a fourth-quarter flurry from both sides, Wahlquist Junior High’s boys basketball team held off Roy Junior High 64-53 in the Weber School District championship game held Feb. 8 at Fremont High School.
Slade Parker led Wahlquist (9-1) with 16 points, scoring eight in the first quarter and eight in the fourth, the latter of which came on 6-of-10 shooting at the foul line.
Wahlquist led 33-20 at halftime. After a 6-6 stalemate in the third quarter, Roy claimed a 27-25 edge during a fourth-quarter track meet.
Dean Hall scored 14 for Wahlquist, all in the first half. Calvin Cooper had 13 points. Cooper Allen pitched in 10 points, all in the second half, and Brady Penland scored nine.
“As a coach, it is easier to accomplish your goals with such great kids, parents and community. This team has all three of those,” Wahlquist head coach Emilio Navarrete said via email. “Roy Jr. had a great team with phenomenal athletes and they gave us all we could handle, but in the end it comes down to the small things in life and in the game. We try to be 1% better each day and focus on what we can control. Really proud of this team. Great season.”
Roy’s hot fourth was fueled by Deshawn Holland, who scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the frame which included knocking down three 3-pointers.
Boston Greenhalgh scored 18 points for Roy (8-2). Jrue Miller knocked down three 3s for nine points. Moresby Tauiautusa added seven points.
“Proud of the resilience that we showed and kept fighting to the end,” Roy Junior head coach Jaxon Schreck said. “Resilient group, never saw a quit in their eyes, so really proud of that effort.”
Roy outshot Wahlquist eight to one from the 3-point line but the Eagles made up the difference at the foul line. Wahlquist shot 21 of 28 from the free-throw stripe while Roy was 3 of 9.
Wahlquist gave Roy its only two losses of the season, also defeating the Razorbacks on the final week of the regular season. Wahlquist, a school in Farr West that feeds into Fremont High, defeated Orion (Weber High) in the playoff semifinals and Roy (Roy High) topped Rocky Mountain (Fremont High) to reach the title game.
