Prep wrestling: Layton boys, Syracuse girls win unbeaten Region 1 titles

By Patrick Carr - Prep Sports Reporter | Jan 25, 2023

LAYTON — Layton High’s boys wrestling team and Syracuse High’s girls wrestling team have both been the best teams in Region 1 all season long.

Once again, both teams ended their regular seasons with drama-free, dual-match wins.

The Layton boys beat Syracuse 55-23 and the Syracuse girls beat Layton 54-20, and both teams clinched unbeaten Region 1 team championships.

It’s the Lancers’ third straight boys wrestling region championship, and sixth in seven seasons. For the Titans girls, it’s their second straight region title.

“We’re hyped. We’re definitely going to try and go get the job done, we’re really close with each other, so we trust each other with our matches and our wins, and we trust each others’ styles of wrestling,” Layton junior Kaden Bennie said.

Along with its normal tournament schedule that took the team to big tournaments in Reno, Nevada, and Clovis, California, the Lancers have gone undefeated in team dual matches, including against five-time defending 6A champion Pleasant Grove (49-16) and six-time defending 3A champ Juab (31-28).

As far as Region 1 dual matches go, Wednesday was Layton’s closest win, and that was still by 32 points. The Lancers’ ultimate goal is to win the 6A boys state championship. They finished second last year and have a good shot at winning it all this year.

“At the beginning of the year, it was our goal to become state champs. So throughout the year, throughout the preseason, we worked really hard throughout the weeks, extra workouts, go to the gym and stuff like that,” Bennie said.

Syracuse’s girls team dominated Region 1 for the second straight year and had only one closer dual match than Wednesday’s 28-point win, and that was a 27-point win over Davis two weeks ago.

“It feels pretty good. We won the region last year so to come back as region champs again is just amazing,” Syracuse junior Hope Barton said. “I’m really proud of the girls this year, they’ve grown so much from last year and I think we deserved this win with how hard everyone’s been working.”

Barton was one of the two Titans wrestlers to win a match Wednesday, as she pinned Layton’s Kajyah Lyons late in the first period.

Girls wrestling has been sanctioned since 2020-21 but it’s still gaining steam as a somewhat new sport; not every region team has a full lineup. Seven Syracuse wrestlers won their matches by forfeit. Of the six contested matches, Layton won four.

Divisional wrestling tournaments, which determine seeding for the state tournament, are next weekend at both Skyridge and Corner Canyon high schools. The state tournaments are once again at Utah Valley University from Feb. 15-16.
