Prep basketball: Ogden High boys clinch first region title since 1993 with road win at Union

By BRETT HEIN and JUSTIN B. JOHNSON - Standard-Examiner | Feb 7, 2024

ROOSEVELT — Trent Porter says he’s recently caught himself looking up at the banner — relatively new, after a recent redecorating of the gymnasium — that lists 1993 as Ogden High’s most recent boys basketball region championship.

“As it got closer in the last week and a half, I thought, ‘Gosh, this is something we could really get,'” said Porter, the second-year head coach at Ogden. “We knew the potential these guys had as they played sub-varsity together the last year or two, and they just bought in … we’ve got a smart group that works hard, and we’ll take that recipe any day.”

The Tigers got the job done Wednesday night at Union High and will soon be adding “2024” to the banner, scoring 26 points in the third quarter on the way to a 65-54 victory to clinch the Region 13 title outright.

Stockton Marriott led all scorers with 21 points for Ogden (17-5, 8-1 Region 13). Nyiol Hauet and Bingham Call each scored 13 points, with Hauet hitting two treys. Teegan Porter tallied 11 points.

“It’s surreal,” Porter said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to celebrate a region championship like this … I’m really proud of these guys.”

Ogden finishes the regular season Friday hosting Grantsville, and the UHSAA publishes brackets for the 3A playoffs Saturday.

“Putting 2024 up there, it’s going to mean a lot. But our focus is on the next game now, trying to beat Grantsville and position ourselves the best we can for when the brackets are released,” Porter said. “We feel like if we play Ogden basketball, we can beat anybody.”
