OGDEN — There is a banner on the west wall of the Phil Russell gymnasium that says “EST. 1892.”

That’s the year Ogden High was established downtown; it moved to its present campus site on Harrison Boulevard in 1937.

A trivia question floating around said gym during Saturday afternoon’s game against Grantsville wondered when the Tigers last advanced to the state quarterfinals — certainly not back to the school’s inception, but generally thought to be in the 1990s.

Ogden boys basketball senior Niyol Hauet was playing in Japan last year, so the school’s playoff history is foreign to him. But he helped answer the puzzling question going forward: it is 2024.

Hauet scored 22 points and the No. 3 Tigers advanced to the 3A quarterfinals by sweeping No. 14 Grantsville for the third time this year, this time with a come-from-behind, 57-47 victory.

“It’s tough because they know us really well, but we also know them really well, so we could practice their sets and make sure we believe in our defense and offense and just get the job done,” Hauet said. “Great to be a part of it.”

Things got off to a rocky start for the home-town team as the Cowboys (8-16) rode to an early 12-4 lead and were up 14-9 after one quarter.

“They were used to our press and kept throwing the ball crosscourt and getting free layups, which got them on a roll,” Hauet said. “They also started with a couple of 3-pointers that we didn’t expect.”

Ogden (19-5) countered with a 21-8 second stanza and headed into the locker room with a 30-22 edge.

Senior point guard Stockton Marriott led the Tiger charge with eight points, Hauet had six and sophomore Jesse Jones added four during the second-quarter stampede against the Cowboys.

Jones’ bucket inside with 3:46 remaining in the half put the Tigers on top for good and they finished on an 11-2 spurt.

“We changed our defense … mixing it up like we did multiple times at practice this week and started getting steals, attacking more and finishing better at the basket. We went up hard and our shots were falling,” Hauet said.

When the Tigers opened the third quarter on a 7-0 streak, the lead ballooned to 37-22, but Grantsville hung around and trailed by just 10 before Josh Cochran drained a 3-pointer that swirled through the net to beat the buzzer — and Ogden led 44-31 after three.

“At halftime we simplified some things. Let’s just run our man, talk on exchanges,” Ogden coach Trent Porter said. “Slow our minds down a little bit; don’t be so jumpy.”

The closest Grantsville got in the fourth period was 54-45 with 44 seconds left. Hauet had two 3-pointers in the final frame — four overall — to help dust any comeback efforts.

“I came out early this morning and got some shots up. I believe in that shot so I keep on shooting,” Hauet said. “I like having the ball in my hands. It’s gotten better spending time with the team for the whole season, getting used to them and them to know me.”

Marriott joined Hauet in double figures with 13 points, while Teegan Porter checked in with seven and Jones scored six.

Ogden held Grantsville to single digits in the second and third quarters and effectively put the game out of reach during that span.

“We knew they don’t like to shoot straightaway off the dribble, so we kept pressure on them and they kept throwing the ball away and we kept getting fastbreaks,” Hauet said.

The Tigers next face No. 11 Union at 2:30 p.m. Thursday as the 3A tournament moves to the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Union edged No. 6 Canyon View in an upset and is also a region rematch for Ogden; the Tigers beat the Cougars 70-61 and 65-54 in the regular season.

“I’m really proud of them; it’s a new experience for them. They’ve never been in a playoff game before,” Trent Porter said. “They’re coachable kids. This is a player’s game. For them to settle in and just be them was really fun to see. We need to know how to play with a lead. That’s going to be a focus next week … good shot vs. great shot, situational-type stuff.

“These games will come down to a play or two, a stop or two. That’s part of the learning process.”

JUDGE MEMORIAL 59, MORGAN 49

MORGAN — No. 7 Morgan used hot shooting from outside in the first quarter, hitting four 3-pointers, to take a 20-13 lead. But then the magic died as No. 10 Judge Memorial (11-13) outscored the Trojans 46-29 the rest of the way for a 3A second-round win.

Derek Tilby led Morgan with 16 points and three 3-pointers. Kolton Asay scored 14 points with four treys. Bracken Saunders added 10 points. The Trojans end the year with a 12-12 record.

JJ Apathjang led all scorers with 18 points and four 3-pointers for Judge Memorial (11-13). The Bulldogs made 11 3-pointers on the afternoon.
