Davis High's Kaleb Weaver heads for home during a Region 1 baseball game versus Syracuse on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Kaysville.Kaleb Weaver and Owen Talbot cooked up the winning runs for No. 3 Davis, turning over hits for a 5-3 win over No. 10 Lehi in the 6A state quarterfinals on Tuesday, held at UCCU Ballpark at Utah Valley University.
On the bump for Davis (23-6), Wally Grant (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) pitched four clean frames before running into trouble in the fifth. Lehi (16-14) tied the ballgame briefly that inning.
The winner between No. 10 Lehi and No. 11 Herriman, each having met Davis this week, will get another crack at the Darts in Wednesday’s semifinal at UVU. The one-loss matchup begins at 11 a.m. with the winner taking on Davis at 4:30 p.m.
Grant tallied his fifth strikeout in ending a scoreless third for the Pioneers, and Davis jumped out 3-0 in the top of the fourth on consecutive doubles by Jaxon Marble, Brody McGuire and Carter Garrett.
Davis picked up two hits and a walk in the fifth but Lehi reliever Hazen Elton quieted McGuire on strikes to end the side. The Pioneers turned around and tied things 3-all at the plate, courtesy of a Murphy Madsen two-RBI double and sacrifice RBI by Cole Ybarra.
Relieving Grant, Croydon Christensen opened the sixth by walking two batters and picking off one at first. Lehi’s Jake Welch grounded to Cayman Sanchez at shortstop, delivering the throw to Marble at second for a double play to end the inning clean.
Elton’s day ended atop the seventh as Kaleb Weaver, singling his way on, led to Owen Talbot moving Weaver to third with a double. A wild pitch by Lehi’s Kade Bailey, followed by a Grant RBI flyout to center field, made for a 5-3 Davis lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Closer Sam Sevy struck out one, and induced a pop-out to Talbot and a groundout to Grant, to seal Davis’ seat in Wednesday’s semifinal contest.
Marble (2 for 3), Garrett (2 for 4), Grant (1 for 2), and McGuire each picked up one of four total RBIs by Davis. The Darts finished the day outhitting Lehi 10-5.
