Boys lacrosse playoffs: Davis High into 6A title game after OT golden goal
Bear River eliminated by strong Judge Memorial showing

No. 2 Davis High boys lacrosse was caught in the top semifinal of Utah’s state playoffs late Wednesday night in a battle of unbeatens against No. 3 Skyridge at Westminster University in Salt Lake City.
Every other semifinal in boys and girls lacrosse this week was decided by three or more goals, with most decided by five or more goals. But the Darts and the Falcons saved the best for last in the 8 p.m. matchup.
Knotted 8-8 at the end of three quarters and 10-10 at the end of regulation, the next goal would send one team to its first bitter loss of the season and the other into a matchup with a juggernaut.
Davis won the overtime faceoff and sent two shots wide but kept possession both times. A third time was the charm, thanks to Dawson Draper’s third goal of the night. He whipped a winner from the right angle 1:45 into the extra period, sending the Darts into a celebration with an 11-10 victory.
Davis (19-0) now advances to a rematch of last year’s heartbreaking 6A final with No. 1 Corner Canyon (18-1); the Chargers took last year’s title matchup 12-11 in double overtime. Corner Canyon has won the boys state championship in the largest division or classification all four years since Utah sanctioned the sport, and looks for a fifth straight trophy; Davis has now reached at least the semifinal round in four straight seasons.
The 6A state championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.
Skyridge (19-1) appeared to find the driver’s seat with 5:45 left when, with Davis down a man on a penalty, Tevan Ward scored on a jump shot to put the Falcons up 9-8.
The Darts needed some tough makes against the Skyridge zone and Ashton Wood delivered quickly with a long, sidearm swing from the left angle to tie it 9-9 with 5 minutes remaining.
With 2:50 remaining, Brek Jensen pocketed a go-ahead goal off the post in the low corner.
Skyridge took a timeout behind its own goal with 1:11 left and charged the ball downfield on the restart, setting up Carter Butterfield slashing through the middle. Butterfield caught a cross pass and converted into the Davis goal to tie it 10-10 with 54 seconds remaining in regulation.
JUDGE MEM 13, BEAR RIVER 3
In a scrum near the Bear River goal, Judge Memorial junior Rome Swanwick scooped up a loose-ball grounder that squirted away from the pack and charged BR senior goalie Tyler Owen.
Swanwick gave a fake and tossed a jump shot over Owen’s shoulder to put Judge ahead 10-1 early in the third quarter. Owen, who stood strong in the cage against a relentless Judge attack, could only turn and fistbump Swanwick for his play.
Bear River bowed out of the 4A boys lacrosse state tournament Wednesday afternoon in Salt Lake City, falling against No. 2 Judge Memorial 13-3 in a semifinal match at Westminster University.
Judge (14-6) was dominant from start to finish at the faceoff line, giving the No. 3 Bears (15-5) a tough hill to climb in time of possession. Owen and the Bear River defense held the Judge attack to a 3-0 margin at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs pounced to open the second quarter, pouring in three goals in the first two minutes to take a 6-0 lead. That became 8-0 until Kash Avery scored off a pick set piece out of a timeout to get BR on the board late in the quarter for an 8-1 halftime score.
Swanwick’s jump attempt was in the middle of five unanswered Judge goals to make it 13-1. Bear River junior Emmett Christensen fired in a long-range goal two minutes into the fourth quarter and senior Carson Brown punched in a score with one minute remaining.
