Porter, speaking to the Standard-Examiner on Tuesday, confirmed he’ll be stepping down from his roles as head coach of Ogden High’s boys basketball and girls tennis teams to pursue this new role within Bonneville’s administration. He replaces Rick Corbridge, who stepped down from the AD position earlier this summer.

The opportunity, Porter said, emerged with a tight gap between the end of summer break and a fresh school year, when the Roy High alum had much of his fall and winter plans laid out in front of him. While with his family in Florida, Porter took stock of his priorities and came to a decision.

“I was really hesitant,” Porter said. “I loved what I was doing at Ogden, and I’ve been really appreciative of everything that Ogden has offered me. I was coaching) girls’ tennis, and our season was ready to kick off, and I’m also the basketball coach, so I was highly invested in that, with kids playing hard this offseason and having some varsity experience coming back. It just kinda came out of nowhere.”

Porter sat down with Bonneville’s administration upon returning home from his trip and interviewed for the position, which he received in short order. His first coaching job was with Rod Belnap and the Lakers boys basketball team in the 1990s.

Since arriving at Ogden in 2022, Porter has led the Tigers to a 54-44 record as head coach and is coming off a 15-11 finish in the 2025-26 regular season. Who’ll take the job is a question Porter can’t answer, but he trusts it’ll be a competitive hire.

Teaching, too, was a crucial part of Porter’s consideration. Porter headed up the Latinos in Action advisory at Ogden High, was a coach in special education, and taught adaptive physical education in addition to his coaching duties.

“All of these things were going through my mind; I was trying to figure everything out,” Porter said. “At the end of the day, I’m excited about this new position, and I really love this (Bonneville) community. As sad as I am to leave Ogden, I’m overwhelmed with excitement for this position.”

It’s an especially big fall for Bonneville, which brought back Connor McGuire as the school’s head football coach this offseason and enters the regular season Friday with its second hire in two years. Elsewhere, the Lakers hired a new boys basketball coach in Jacob Lower last spring.

Ogden, too, must answer some similar coaching decisions in the coming weeks. Aside from the now vacant basketball job, the Tigers are seeking to fill their head baseball coaching position, too, after Kyle Bubak stepped away from the role due to personal reasons, the school told the Standard-Examiner earlier this month.
